Bill Plaschke bids farewell to the Beijing Games

5:40 AM, August 24, 2008

Now, I'm not going to say that Bill Plaschke is getting old -- actually I could, because I'm pushing 50 and he's got a few years on me, I believe -- but you need to check out his farewell video from the Great Wall.

Here's the video, complete with Bill huffing and puffing as if he were an Olympic athlete:

I read Plaschke's final assessment of his time in Beijing and was flabbergasted by its inanity. I've traveled to Beijing innumerable times since the 1980s and his observations are totally bogus. Come on - slip covers on car seats as some sort of sneaky way to deceive visitors about the condition of the seats in Chinese taxis? Every Chinese car I've ever been in has had seat covers just like every chair in a Chinese household has slip covers. Beijing a city of 17 million being a Potemkin village with modern sky scrappers standing empty just for show? How ridiculous can you get? Did he actually investigate? What about all the overbuilt cities in the US with empty high rises due to over capacity? Beijing has always been a safe, clean and orderly city with very friendly and helpful citizens. I always look forward to my visits there. I could go on and on about the ignorant comments made by this ingrate. He is either a fool or a blathering idiot..

Dennis:

No matter how great you say it is, I'll pass. The pollution is a deal breaker for me.
