An aggressive Mike Day captured a spot on the first U.S. BMX Olympic team with a dominating victory in the third moto, leading wire to wire to earn another 10 points, giving him 32 and a lead that was impossible for other riders to overcome.

Donny Robinson of Napa, the pre-trials favorite, finished a disappointing fourth in the third moto but had 21 points. Because the finals are worth 15 points to the winner, Robinson is still within striking distance but Day, of Santa Clarita, only had to finish in the top five of the finals to win.
