Anthony Weiner, disgraced politician, ends the year with this upbeat Blackberry text: ‘Jordan Zain Weiner ... 7lbs 5.8 oz of sparkling wonder; Did I mention his mom is amazing?; We love you for welcoming him.’

Gothamist offers a report on the text that Weiner sent to friends after the birth of his son Tuesday. The baby’s mother is Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In June, Weiner confessed to having sent a lewd photo of himself from the waist down to a college student. He also admitted having had inappropriate online contact with several other women over the last three years.

Abedin was likely in the early stages of pregnancy when her husband’s confession and subsequent resignation from Congress occurred.

‘I did a regrettable thing, and for that I apologize,’ Weiner said at the time. ‘I believe what I did demonstrates a deep personal failing.’

As the Los Angeles Times’ Booster Shots blog noted at the time, sexual indiscretion by men who are public figures often puts their wives in a difficult position.

Some, like Hillary Clinton, stand by their high-profile husbands, while others, like Tiger Woods’ ex-wife Elin Nordegren, cut the cord. Maria Shriver, now splitting from former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, has done both at different times. ... Is this the dilemma of the political woman alone, or are women more likely, or even expected, to forgive spousal infidelity than men are?

One study found that ‘women are more likely to be upset at emotional cheating, while men find sexual cheating the more heinous infidelity. And another study ... found that women are more likely to forgive perceived slights because they tend to have more empathy.’
