Hearing set for Cornel West, others arrested at Supreme Court

A hearing is set Monday for 19 protesters, including civil rights activist Cornel West, arrested Sunday during a demonstration on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Charges against the group include refusing to leave the grounds of the Supreme Court and demonstrating with signs, which is prohibited, according to an Associated Press report. Ann Wilcox, legal advisor to the protesters, told the wire service that she expects a not-guilty plea from the protesters at Monday’s hearing and that they will return to court at a later date.
As the Los Angeles Times’ Politics Now blog reported Sunday, West -- a former Harvard University professor now teaching at Princeton University -- was taking part in the dedication of the monument to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on the National Mall. The event had been delayed from August because of complications from the East Coast quake and Hurricane Irene.
He then, according to media reports, moved on to an anti-corporate greed protest at the home of the high court. That demonstration is known in Washington as Occupy D.C.; similar protests have been percolating across the nation.
