As Hurricane Irene worked its way up the East Coast, Connecticut’s governor blamed it for a 10th death Sunday: a man who died in a fire blamed on wires downed by high winds.

Gov. Dannel Malloy announced the incident at an early-morning news briefing as the storm, now down to a Category 1 hurricane but still bringing whipping winds and driving rain, made its second landfall in New Jersey and headed for New York. Nine other people have died in storm-related incidents since Irene made its first landfall in North Carolina early Saturday.

“This is a dangerous situation,” said Malloy, who warned everyone to stay off the streets. “You know what?” he said when asked if police on horseback might be deployed on roads closed to traffic. “Horses are projectiles in 50 mph winds.”
