Rebecca Black's 'My Moment' tops 22 million streams

Rebecca Black's new single is "My Moment"
Rebecca Black’s latest single, “My Moment,” was a promise from the YouTube singer to prove the detractors who said she “would be nothing” wrong.

And she has.

The single, a follow-up to her viral hit “Friday,” has topped more than 22 million views. “My Moment,” which she released only a few weeks ago, was watched nearly 2 million times in less than 24 hours.

Black's fame has had its consequences, though. She revealed on ABC's “Nightline” Wednesday that she was forced to drop out of her Orange County school after ferocious bullying and taunts reached a breaking point.

"When I walk by they'll start singing 'Friday' in a really nasally voice," she said of the constant mocking. "Or, you know, they'll be like, 'Oh hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?' "

But, then, who needs silly high school drama when friends like Katy Perry like you enough to bring you out onstage and put you in her video?

YouTube novelties, they grow up fast: Rebecca Black returns with 'My Moment'

Rebecca Black’s new single, “My Moment,” which she released Monday, might not be as catchy as her YouTube hit "Friday" (which could be a good or bad thing), but the midtempo song shows the aspiring pop diva aiming to make herself credible in the landscape of teen pop. The question is, will it work?

“This is my moment, my moment / It’s my time, flying high, feels like my moment, my moment,” she sings. “I’ve waited for so long, but not everybody knows this is my moment, my moment.” OK, so it's  nearly as repetitive as "Friday."

From the song's opening refrain, Black seems to be distancing herself from her status as YouTube curiousity. "Weren't you the one who said that I would be nothing?" Black sings, her voice given a light digital touchup. The video shows Black enjoying some of the trappings of fame, and insisting time and time again that she is no novelty. It's teen pop at its most self-aware and crafy.

So does she hook you with "My Moment," or do you miss the Black of "Friday," who was only concerned about the days of the week?

The 'Friday' meme turns evil: Rebecca Black remixed (darkly) [Video]

Like many others, Pop & Hiss is getting a little tired of the Rebecca Black/"Friday" meme -- even as we admittedly enable it to continue. But every time it seems like all that can be said about the silly song has been said, the Internet offers yet another angle on it, providing more evidence of the myriad ways in which the song and the accompanying video have become a canvas on which artists both musical and visual are rendering their own reactions to it.

Attention parents: Before you watch this video, made by a company called Blood Drunk Studios, make sure your kids aren't around, because it might scare the dickens out of them. Bonus: If your kids are fans of the song and you're trying to wean them of it, this video will no doubt make them never want to see the video or sing the song again. (Just make sure Family Services doesn't find out.)

Have a nice Friday -- which, in case you're wondering, comes after Thursday, but before Saturday. (Hat tip: Dangerous Minds)
