Library of Congress adds 25 new recordings to its collection, including classics from Captain Beefheart, Steely Dan and George Crumb

Whether it's hip-hop or humpback whales, the Library of Congress certainly knows how to spread the love around when it comes to America’s aural preservation. On Wednesday, the government agency named 25 new additions to the ninth annual National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, ensuring that these cultural, artistic and historic recordings will remain available for all time. Among the chosen were recordings by De La Soul, Al Green and the recently deceased Captain Beefheart. 

“Audio recordings have documented our lives and allowed us to share artistic expressions and entertainment,” Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said in a statement. “The salient question is not whether we should preserve these artifacts , but how best collectively to save this indispensable part of our history.”

Under the terms of the National Recording Preservation Act of 2000, Billington, with advice from the library’s National Recording Preservation Board, must annually select 25 recordings that are "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and are at least 10 years old.

The library has added recordings to the registry since 2002. This year’s batch was whittled down from 900 submissions and brings the total to 325 (fifty recordings were added each year for four years, with 25 added each year since. The recordings now being added are from nominations made in 2010.)

Spanning from 1853-1994, this year’s list seems to include something for everyone-- baseball fans (Edward Meeker’s 1908 anthem “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,”), oceanographers (the 1970 recording of “Songs of a Humpback Whale”), faithful lovers (Tammy Wynette’s 1968 crossover hit, “Stand by Your Man”) and classic rock fans (Steely Dan's 1977 album, "Aja")

Other additions to the registry include recordings from Nat King Cole, Les Paul, Lydia Mendoza, Blind Willie Johnson, the Sons of Pioneers, George Crumb, comedian Mort Sahl and the Almanac Singers.

Nominations were gathered from online submissions from the public and from the National Recording Preservation Board, comprised of leaders in fields of music, recorded sound and preservation. Nat King Cole remembered: 'The Nat 'King' Cole Show' available for digital download on iTunes

Episodes of the short-lived 1950s variety show will start to be released for download on iTunes on Tuesday, the anniversary of the singer-pianist’s death.

Nat “King” Cole fans, as well as those interested in the history of race relations in America, have reason to celebrate this week: His estate will begin posting episodes of his groundbreaking 1950s series “The Nat ‘King’ Cole Show” for digital downloading on iTunes.

For a too-brief period in 1956-57, the always urbane and elegant singer-pianist hosted some of the most revered names in jazz and pop on his NBC series: Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mercer, Mel Tormé and Peggy Lee, among others.
The episodes have been remastered for the first time from the original black-and-white kinescopes, which sets them apart from a DVD release of highlights from the series released in 2002 without the cooperation of Cole’s family.

“It’s about time,” Cole’s widow, Maria Hawkins Cole, 88, said by phone from her home in Florida. “I don’t know what the first releases are — there’s one he did with the Mills Brothers, and they were terrific. This many years later, you hear them and there still isn’t a group around that sounds like them. Offhand, that’s probably my favorite one.

“I have to tell you, in those days I didn’t realize how important some of those people were,” she said. “But as time went by it became clear what geniuses they were.”

The same might be said of Cole himself. He often downplayed his abilities as a singer and as a pianist. But Maria Cole, who was five years younger than her husband, recalls, “Nat would talk like he wasn’t that good, but I did meet Art Tatum once. We weren’t married then. He said, ‘I hope you know [Nat] is a genius.’ I met a few people with Nat. I met Billie Holiday like that.”
