With Skrillex up for best new artist at the Grammys, Calvin Harris heating up the charts with Rihanna and AVICII, Swedish House Mafia, Kaskade, Afrojack and David Guetta landing plum Coachella slots, there’s little doubt that DJ culture has gone mainstream.

So, perhaps it’s little surprise that a reality competition show would be on the horizon. Will Smith and ‘American Idol’/’X-Factor’ vet Simon Cowell have joined forces to seek out the next hottest DJ –- or at least the one most likely to win a talent show.

Cowell’s Syco Entertainment has announced a partnership with Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment to develop the new show, according to a release today from Syco.

‘We have been working on this show for over a year and we wanted to partner with the right people,’ Cowell said in a statement. ‘DJs are the new rock stars; it feels like the right time to make this show.’ Pinkett-Smith adds, ‘This show will comb the world to find a new breed of talent.’

Syco, Overbrook and Sony Pictures Television have not yet announced their U.S. and U.K. broadcast partners for the project. Fingers are crossed, however, that DJ Jazzy Jeff is tapped to judge this thing. RELATED:
