'Sesame Street's' latest victim: Elvis Costello
It's never too early to get the young'uns comfortable with the idea that at some point between the ages of 15 and 20 a significant other will most likely instill in them a lesson in absolutely brutal heartbreak.
So when some folks in The Times' office squealed with joy at the sight of Elvis Costello singing along wtih Elmo, it seemed like a fine time to applaud "Sesame Street" for easing kids into what will surely be an inevitable cynicism toward love by rewriting Costello's she-left-me-for-another-man staple "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes" into "Monster Went and Ate My Red 2."
There are furry puppets and missing numbers instead of girls and their lame boyfriends, and the "Sesame Street" tune ends on a rather upbeat note. But just because there's a giant No. 2 that's on the loose, the metaphor still comes across loud and clear. It's about girls, right?
