Laurieann Gibson puts Lady Gaga and other stars in step

Choreographer Laurieann Gibson has helped Lady Gaga with her often spectacle-filled performances. ‘She is so fearless,’ Gibson says of Gaga.

Laurieann Gibson
is pressed for time — even at breakfast. The in-demand choreographer is noshing on bacon and scrambled eggs before she’ll race to LAX to catch a Chicago-bound flight. There she will join her busiest client, Lady Gaga, to tape a performance for Oprah.

This after a hectic month spent completing Gaga’s “Judas” video and HBO concert special (she directed both), traveling to Atlanta to film an upcoming BET reality competition, shooting a vacuum cleaner ad and promoting her E! docu-series, “The Dance Scene,” which follows Gibson and her team of dancers and choreographers as they prep artists and industry events. The show is averaging 1.1 million viewers weekly.

Since her days as a Fly Girl on “In Living Color,” Gibson has choreographed for longtime collaborator and friend Sean “Diddy” Combs, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry and Gaga, among others. Her dance work with the latter singer, whom she affectionately calls Gags, has yielded 10 videos, including “Bad Romance,” which earned Gibson a Video Music Award for choreography in 2010. The 2003 Jessica Alba flick, “Honey,” was based loosely on her life.

Gibson is accustomed to the pace. On a tour of the Hollywood dance studios where she does her work (and later used to film the E! show) she hopped around as she juggled projects: Kelly Rowland in one studio rehearsing for a video, teen pop upstarts Destinee & Paris in another. She managed to find time for a moment with Pop & Hiss.

People might not know that you’ve been with Lady Gaga from the beginning. How did that union start?

She came to me like, “I got dropped and I don’t really know if I have it in me to know what I need to do to make my dream come true.” And then she played me her record and I said, “Listen, I’ve got enough for the both of us, let’s go.” We started designing her opinion as a live performer and what that would be, what the records would feel like visually. How would “Just Dance” turn into “Poker Face,” into “Bad Romance”— and now the “Monster Ball” [tour].

A lot of her visual aesthetics have been compared to Madonna. As her creative director what are your thoughts on that?

Listen, [Madonna] should be bitter because I did it on purpose, and you can quote me. I did it on purpose because for all those kids who believe that you can’t, I wanted to let them feel that you can. And that’s what I represent, that’s what Gags represents. That’s what this movement represents.

You’ve been pretty tight-lipped on this BET project. What can you tell us about it?

It’s called “Born to Dance: Laurieann Gibson.” We auditioned 20 girls from three different cities. These girls, like me, were in their canopy bed dreaming of an end place and nothing around them said it was possible. I talk about it and I cry because I think of who let these girls down. When someone says you’re not good because they are intimidated by your gift, I’m going to help them not internalize that.

What can you tell us about the new Gaga album?

“Born This Way” is shaping up to be creative ecstasy. I think what I most love about this project is she is so fearless and the freedom that I’ve gotten since day one to stretch my gift. It’s hard to work with an artist that’s like, “I don’t want to do that.” You can’t push them. Where she is like, “Let’s go, and add more sprinkles.” It’s like a rubber band. It stretched me. She did an incredible job on the new album. It’s a visual fantasy for me. There’s no place we can’t go.

Can't wait to hear the album! =D
"Listen, [Madonna] should be bitter because I did it on purpose, and you can quote me. "
Hahahahahahaha! I think Madonna's even laughing at this. She would say: "I looked like more than half of people from the 50s and now this bitch is getting fu-cked by morons in the internet cause she resembles me. Thanks God there was no internet back then!"
I just can imagine all the delusion in both Madonna and Gaga and everybody else's die hard fans in the up-coming days.
Spread love people.... LOVE.
Period.

Lady Gaga copies Madonna.

..and she call herself 'creative' director?

LAME!

Lady Gaga is nothing but a Madonna wannabe...PERIOD

For Katy and Simple Indulgence!

Björk + R. Murphy + Cyndi Lauper + Janet J. + Marilyn Monroe = Madonna!

Madonna gets a taste of her own medicine.

Gaga and her people basically admit to plagiarism. And then Gaga gets angry and calls people "retarded" if you keep accusing her of copying other artists.

Gaga copies everybody : Madonna, Roisin Murphy, Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Ayumi Hamasaki, and many others. "ANYONE WITH TWO EYES CAN SEE THE RESEMBLANCE."

I dare the ridiculous clown that is Gaga to accuse Aguilera or anyone else of copying her every again.

Haha..that is some fearless stuff there. I mean if Madonna ripped-off other artists ideas for so long(from Marylin Monroe, Tina Turner, ABBA, Cyndi Lauper, etc., etc.) and get away with it, then why can't Gaga do it without getting cruxified. That is what I love about Gaga, a true thought provoking artist.

The difference is Madonna makes it fresh. Lazy Caca just rehashes and it's boring. Any thoughts she provokes has already been provoked. That automatically makes her more boring to me.

If Gaga copies, that's one thing. But to do it and be praised for her so-called originality and creativity is downright mental and only goes to show the massive delusion of her followers. I saw her tour. It was pretty frickin' boring because I've already seen it and seen it done better.

What an overrated hack. She goes this route because doing anything else doesn't get her attention.

And I personally think this so-called "director" needs to add in the other people Caca's busy copy/pasting, especially Grace Jones.

Gaga is a legend!

First Lady Gaga said those accusations about her ripping Madonna were "retarded". Now her own team admits it. I guess the only talent that Gaga really owns is hypocrisy, right.?

Wait, Laurieann is only the creative director, choreographer and producer of just one of gaga's VIDEOS. The music come from Gaga and her producers, and it's by the music why people are comparing constantly Lady gaga with other singers, not her videos.

@Nate

Madonna doesn't copy off Tranet Jackson.

LMAO at her director confirming Gaga rips-off Madonna!!!! LOLOLOL

How embarassing to have your own creative director call you out. Its been quite obvious Gaga is nothing more than a cheap version of Madonna. Never thought i would see the day her own team admit to it but after all the backlash i guess it was bound to happen sooner rather than later.

I don't think anyone really needs to admit it, anyone with eyes & ears already knows that 99% of Lady Gaga's work is a cheap rip off of something that has already been done by much more talented & original artists.

Remember that politically incorrect word that Lady Gaga used to offend people & cause media outrage when she was asked about her single sounding a bit like a Madonna song? The same word that Madonna caused outrage with back in 2008 when she used it on stage while talking about her ex-husband (Yes I suspect that Gaga did that on purpose).

Watch some old Madonna interviews & compare her opinions & answers to Gaga's, watch some of the footage from Madonna's live shows & compare the concepts & choreography to Gaga's. She is taking music fans for fools & this interview is just further proof!

@David - It's not about the music, it's more about the look, choreography, videos, stage performances & what Lady Gaga claims to stand for.

@Nat - This: http://www.aishamusic.com/lawsuit_many_artists_madonna_stole_from.htm is just the ratings of an obsessed pathological woman, as anyone with half a brain will see if they do indeed read it.

Haha, I love how the Madonna stans cry about Gaga being a Madonna wannabe; that Madonna was so-called original, but as soon as you show them that you have done your research and call Madonna a Raffaella Carra wannabe, they give pityful attempts at justifying her rip-offs. Just admit Madonna stans, Madonna was not that special, she simply copied everything from lesser known artists to fool everyone else.

hmmm Madonna along with others. DJ White Shadow just recently claimed others were coping Gaga's Lightning Bolt make up, as a defense.......totally clueless and embarrassingly ignorant statement. He clearly has never seen the famous David Bowie album Aladdin Sane.

Gaga needs to reign in her creative Team and get everyone on the right page. If you're going to lie or tell the truth, do it in unison. And for God sake don't pick a classic famous and very distinctive Rock Look from a Internationally Famous artist and publicly claim it's original, you just look stupid.

@Nat
Roisin+ Janet+Bjork all came out AFTER Madonna. The only one who she was really influenced by was Marilyn Monroe and she was a moviestar!!!!
Madonna has been an ICON for 30 years. No matter how hard you try she will NEVER go away!!!! No matter how many fake websites you promote.
I pity Gaga and her team. If she wanted to give Madonna medicine she should have done it BETTER but she didn't and she can't!
Do you really think Madonna cares??? She already made history and is a Legend!

Madonna has been inspired by others artists on the past there's no doubt about it... the difference is that she accept it, Gaga is a MadonnaCopy cat and claims herself original... is just pathetic

You all seem not to have much music culture... of course, coming from people who worships Lady Gaga that's nothing new or strange.

@ Nat

You must be intellectually impaired to consider Aisha's blog reliable, right?

She'a a Madonna hater.

Not really into defending Madonna (she doesn't need my deffense) but it is REALLY FUNNY how people even compare them both:

Gaga (a singer) blatantly copies other singers - Madonna, Roisin Murphy, grace Jones. They are all singers, some of them, like Madonna, still active and very successful. Borrowing imagery and sound of people who do exactly what you do is NOT an inspiration, it is a COPY.

When Madonna did her Material girl video, she took the iconic imagery of a gold-digger played by Marilyn Monrow in a FILM called "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". It is an imagery taken from a classic Hollywood film and re-interpreted into the MUSIC world. Same with Tamara de Lempicka, Bob Fosse, Martha Graham, Remedios Varo - people that influenced Madonna a lot throughout the years - all from a different field, applied to her work as a musician. That's called inspiration.

You are a joke, hon. Almost as big of a joke as that Aisha - who is one of the biggest jokes on the Internet.

Besides this very simple and obvious difference between the copies Lady gaga does and the obvious inspirations Madonna has had, there is one more thing: Gaga and her team make an effort to say she's original and a genius and deny the obvious copies. When Madonna sampled that ABBA song, she payed them royalties, they are credited for the song. When Madonna did a video for her tour inspired by tina turner's album cover (Accid Queen) she said Tina Turner is an "amazing woman and a true inspiration".

Another point you are missing, Madonna has been groundbreaking and innovative in several moments of her career. Her first album, for example, was "dance music", but due to her image and influence, today, the world perceive that genre as "pop music". Gaga, on the other hand, is about to release her third album and still making contemporary music. And worse - they are all getting bad reviews from the critics: "BTW" was a blatant rip-off of Madonna's "Express Yourself". "Judas" is a "Bad Romance 2.0". "You and I" is considered "Speechless 2.0" and the new "Edge of Glory" sounds JUST LIKE Cher and Pat Benatar. Gaga's third album is, just like her two previous ones, pure POP REGURGITATION. Madonna had already changed her sound... from pure dance music (Madonna) to straight forward pop (Like a Virgin) to progressive pop (True Blue).

Madonna was also the FIRST music star to walk hand-in-hand with fashion on a higher level - being the first star to make associations with international maisons. Gaga, again, walking the path Madonna opened - her deal with Alexander McQueen seems a joke if compaired to Madonna and Gaultier and the effect it had in the fashion world and pop culture as a whole.

And, yeah, Madonna has been original in so many ways - even in her visual appropriations. Madonna's deal, since day one, has always been taking something classic and add her punk-rock touch to it. Gaga's deal is re-do exactly what Madonna's done - with less grace, less artistry, less talent.

Oh, yeah, speaking of talent. Gaga is bad as a songwriter, sometimes, her lyrics are embarrassing (while Madonna is considered one of the best song writers in pop music). And, mmm... playing an instrument is a skill, not a talent, okay, folks? If playing an instrument or vocal range meant talent, Mariah Carey would be considered a talented musician. But, no, talent is what you do with your skills and gifts - neither gaga, nor Mariah Carey are talented musicians. Madonna's body of work, varied and plural catalog is enough proof of her talent.

well, this sound more like let's manipulate the kids and the audience with this story- there is not scale of values for this mouvement!! bad!! relly bad!!

@Nat:

Madonna predates Janet, Roisin Murphy and Bjork, you idiot. Especially the last two.
