M-Bone, born Montae Ray Talbert, 22, was shot twice in the head Sunday night in the 400 block of North La Brea Avenue while seated in the driver’s side of a black car, said Lt. Steve Overly of the Inglewood Police Department. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

C-Smoove, a member of the group, tweeted, “Ma life changed drastically in the. Blink of an eye rip mbone.”

Cali Swag District’s hit, “Teach Me How to Dougie,” was the center of a national dance craze that even had First Lady Michelle Obama moving; The Times profiled the group in March.

Cali Swag District had planned on releasing its debut album, ‘The Kickback,’ in May.

[For the record, 4:11 p.m. May 16: An earlier version of this post misspelled M-Bone’s birth name. It is spelled Montae Ray Talbert.]
