Prince announces first set of Forum dates, kicks off Thursday

NewYorkSkyCROP_3

Prince is the only artist who can announce a set of impromptu shows and send fans -- and music writers -- into a frenzy.

Last week, the Purple One phoned in to “Lopez Tonight” to announce that he would be taking over the Forum for a 21-night residency that would begin April 14 -- certainly causing a panic for fans who had  already committed to Coachella.

Still unconfirmed is whether all the shows will be at the Forum. After initial indications that they might be spread around town, it's yet unclear as to the venues for the other 18 shows. Monday we got official word that a set of shows, dubbed the Welcome 2 America Live “21 Nite Stand” tour, would go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Prince previously played successful residencies in the New York area in December and January which received tremendous acclaim each night – and even snagged headlines for playfully booting Kim Kardashian offstage during a New York gig for not dancing with him (look, if Prince says dance, you better dance). He also played a handful of intimate nights in Oakland and five shows in the Carolinas.

Always a hot ticket draw, the star made it a point to make the tour affordable for fans -- a welcome gesture given the economy, gas prices and soaring concert ticket price tags. He has promised that nearly 85 percent of all tickets will be available for $25, inclusive of all service fees.

The superstar will be joined by backing band the New Power Generation and “a whole gang of special guests,” he teased during the phone call with George Lopez.

Special guests for the L.A. performances are expected to be announced shortly but he has previously been joined by Cee Lo Green, Esperanza Spalding, Santana, Cassandra Wilson, and Sheila E among others, so it’s highly unlikely that he wouldn’t pull out all the stops for his L.A. sets.

His first two Madison Square Garden shows sold out in 30 minutes and over 45,000 tickets were sold in the first three days for the string of Oakland shows – so tickets will undoubtedly go quick at the Forum.

Take a peek at the first set of dates after the jump:

after the last promotion of "I'll perform 3 shows in one night at Nokia" fiasco (yes, it was a complete TURD), I'll never spend my money to see Prince again. This guy is such a temperamental little twerp.

Resellers bought all the tickets and significantly increased the price. So there is no such thing as a $25 ticket. I felt lucky to get one for $150. There has to be some intervention on behalf of consumers for these big ticket shows. The list price is never what you pay!

Yes, the tix are indeed $25 + the Ticketmaster service chgs but that's not just Prince shows, that's lame Ticketmaster. There are still plenty of $25 tix available as of 4pm 4/12/11 (I just checked Ticketmaster right now)....that's a STEAL for a Prince show!

Yeah, the April 23 show was sold out within a few minutes. No doubt ticket scalping scumbags got most of them.

So, yes, as another posted stated, there is really no such thing as a $25 ticket for regular Joes, especially weekends. But nice try, Prince.

Have always liked your stuff. So very talented. wh

My daughter went to show 4/21 he came on at 9 20 and was done at 12.15 with 6 oncores.. next night on at 920 off at 1045 with 2 oncores...crowd wouldnt leave..he left at 1130 on his bike to the exit...security said he did'nt like the audience..not enough energy for him to continue...what a joke this guy is...40 min on stage..total..never again

Last night way rocked with no disappointment. R O C K E D.... Sets were very fun. His backup women were, uh, interesting... great show!!!

I went Mothers Day weekend and it was the Bomb Baby!!!! There were fans you know "old school" fans... they knew all the words to every song....they knew all the moves....and were thirsty for a party!!! He said "What's My Name" and we all knew with conviction "prince" the g*#d#*mn "Prince."
People came in wheel chairs, walking canes, and pimping the prince style... it was worth the 25.00/

Prince preformed at the HP Pavilion in San Jose May 20th 2011. Prince is a consummate performer. From the time he got on stage he thoroughly entertained a stadium packed audience. Prince preformed a few of his latest songs, but what got the crowd jumping was his classic hits like Little Red Corvette. Prince danced and electrified the crowd with his guitar. If you haven’t seen Prince in concert but have seen the movie Purple Rain, that is really how he performs. Prince closed the show with Purple Rain but his fans gave him such an ovation he came back out and tickled the crowd by saying “You’ll know how many hits I have, we can be here until next Saturday”. When the crowd hollered, he said, “Don’t play with me”, You’ll aint ready for me.” When some thought the show was over, his loyal fans hollered, stomped and screamed for well over 20 minutes and to their delight, Prince returned for a few more fan favorites like when Doves Cry. His special guest was the beautiful Shelia E. who preformed Glamorous Life. Of course, being a Bay Area native Shelia E. receive a roaring standing ovation from the crowd.

Prince is a genius...but he is also a pain in the ass. All the waiting, anticipating and stress to score a ticket once he decides where and when is unnecessary to say the least. While I am a avid fan and have seen him many times, you cant help but feel played out by these games for which he appears to enjoy so much. When you have so much talent, and you have proven your worth...why? UR fans are here! So quit testing our loyalty. Thank you.

Don't know what most of of posters are talking about or what the expected. I saw Prince five times @ $25 a ticket with no fees. My seats for 4 of the shows were in Loge, section 35 or 36 and the last show 5/28/11, in the colannade, section 36. All were purchased online except for the last show. Other than sitting on stage, I had the best seats in the house for $25. I'm ready to go again.
