How to gauge the most anticipated acts at Coachella based on the multicolored scrawls on car windows (or, scenes from the parking lot, Day 1):

On the minivan pulling into the dust bowl Friday: ‘I need two tickets. Coachella 2011. Honk if you love The Strokes. Wave if you love music.’

On the Volvo: ‘Honk once for Coachella. Honk twice if you’re horny.’ Alongside purple peace signs, rainbows and pink love hearts.

On the Hondo Civic: ‘Coachella. Indio or bust.’

On the Nissan Altima: Writen in psychedelic handprints: ‘AJ, Sydney, Naseem, and Antony ‘Coachella.’ ‘

On the Dodge Stratus: ‘Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Cold War Kids, Best Coast, CSS, Kanye West, Sleigh Bells.’

Every other car seemed to have ‘Carpoolchella.’

On the Ford Focus: ‘Delta Spirit, Cut Copy, Animal Collective, The Black Keys.’

On the Honda Element: ‘Six year Coachella vets.’

On a Nissan Xterra: ‘One Day as a Lion. Caifanes, Brandon Flowers, The Strokes.’

And one mildly confused attendee only wrote ‘Dodgers’ on the windshields. Presumably, those were the guys strutting in ahead of me. Highlights of their attire: tank top, black Kobro Kai headband and bright blue sunglasses. His bro-friend wore a fanny pack and a red bandanna.
