Coachella beyond the main stage: DJ Lance Rock meets the parents
From: Los Angeles (via St. Louis)
Reason to care: If you know Lance Rock, it's probably from his star turn as the host of "Yo Gabba Gabba!," Nickelodeon's fantastic kids show that mixes learning with beat music. But Lance Rock was a musician before he was a TV star (and king of the Midwest rave scene before that), and achieved success -- though not enough -- as part of the early '00s act the Ray Makers (and before that, My Other Self). He also hosted a long-running club at the Short Stop. He knows more about dance music -- from funk to hip hop to Chicago house and Detroit techno -- than any other children's host in the history of the medium (including Mr. Rogers).
Fun fact: Before landing the "Yo Gabba Gabba!" gig, Lance Rock was a worker bee at Amoeba Music in Hollywood. (Disclosure: Before relocating to L.A., this writer worked with Lance at a St. Louis record store.) Also: If you want evidence of Lance Rock's fame level among the kiddie set, find the image of Brad Pitt dressed for Halloween in Lance's iconic orange jumpsuit and sideburns.
Next: Between touring to support "Yo Gabba Gabba!" at conventions and theaters, and prepping for a new season of the show, Lance Rock has a full plate.
