Michael Jackson memorial: Lionel Richie sings 'Jesus Is Love'

July 7, 2009 | 11:06 am

Lionel Pop & Hiss brings you quick thoughts on some of the main performances at today's Michael Jackson memorial.

What: Lionel Richie's "Jesus is Love"

A classic sermon, Richie's performance shortly after Mariah Carey's made it clear that this would not be a tribute concert. Backed by a slowly rising choir, Richie's strong vocals provided a sturdy, uplifting take on the song, one powerful enough for a Sunday morning, as well as a downtown Los Angeles basketball arena.

As The Times' Ann Powers writes from inside the venue, " 'Jesus, he won't let you down,' sings Richie, gesticulating aggressively heavenward. The smooth star convincingly testifies, more like a Detroit preacher than the Jheri-curled gentleman behind 'All Night Long.' This is the mood here, church not club."

It was such a blessing to hear Lionel Richie sing "Jesus is Love", many heard the name of Jesus at a time when their hearts and spirits were open for comfort and they received it from another great entertainer singing about the greatest comforter.

I watched NHL first then turned to CBS. I enjoy Katy's sensitivity and her guests sitting with her. As for the presentation, Mariah sang first, then, LIONEL RICHIE which kept me or got to me, to continue watching as the song he sang was in my opinion opened the "door" to the truth. Jesus is Love. Without HIM, there is only the opposite. No one enters into the Kingdom of God without the knowledge what Jesus' LOVE did for the sins of the whole world. Then to finish the days' service Paris' little admission of love for her daddy was to me exceptional to conclude this memorial. I thank God. I recall Micheal on the Ed Sullivan's show back in 1969, and knew he would 'rise' because his voice was a gift from God. That taught him to please man, in happiness, and gained monetarily to assist those with less as is God's way. He was the youngest, and rose to the highest. Kinda like King David.

Lionel,The HolySpirit and Jesus Glory has risen on you. He has sent heavenly Faith, Love, joy, and such power into my heart. He really zapped you with his annointing.
