Hey, downtowners: Safari Sam's wants you at the Regent, for free

Safari500

For all you music fans sweating out the plummeting values of your downtown loft spaces: The latest incarnation of Safari Sam's feels for you. Downtown-centric blog Angelenic pointed us toward a nifty deal from the club, which recently relocated from its dicey east Hollywood location (where a few passersby met untimely fates) to the Regent Theater on Main Street. For the next six months, Angelenos who live in ZIP Codes 90013, 90014, 90015, 90017 and 90021 can get into any show for free with proof of address.

For Safari Sam's, whose new space is twice as big as its old, the deal seems pretty savvy. By being neighborhood boosters and encouraging local foot traffic, they get help filling a new club whose floor might have looked a bit sparse even with a turnout that would have sold out the old venue. Locals have a new cover-less clubhouse for live music in a part of town that sorely needs something smaller than the Orpheum or the L.A. Live venues. Everyone involved wins, except for those of us who live (or work tireless, ever-bleaker hours) in the nearby 90012.

(UPDATE: Sam Lanni, the Sam of Safari Sam's, informs us that "We are considering downtown the entire area between the freeways.  Yes it includes 90012.  Send the people down."

That is a total diss! I used to live in 90013 back in the day, but moved up the hill to 90012. During that time, we helped fight for the salvation of the Regent. I still stroll down 4th Street on a very regular basis to patronize the cluster of restaurants/shops that have sprouted off Spring and Main.

I guess 90012 may not be an edgy enough demographic. Bunker Hill ain't as hip as the OBD. And 012 also includes a large swath of Chinatown.

I've talked with the owner and he is honoring ZIP code 90012. Crisis averted!

Thanks for the linkage, by the way.
