The prestigious festival kicks off in the southeast France town on May 16. Check out the trailers below to get familiarized with some up this year’s films.
“Moonrise Kingdom,” directed by Wes Anderson
Opening the festival is the Edward Norton-starring comedy by Wes Anderson. It’s his first film to appear at Cannes. Set in the 1960s, "Kingdom" centers on two young lovers who run away from their New England town, prompting a search party to go after them. Focus Features will distribute the film in the U.S. starting May 25. Bill Murray, Bruce Willis and Frances McDormand round out the cast.
“On the Road,” directed by Walter Salles
Starring Kristen Stewart, Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley, this long-gestating adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s 1957 Beat novel will be in competition at the festival. Executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola, the film also features Viggo Mortensen, Terrance Howard and Amy Adams.
In the vein of “Paris, Je t’Aime” and “New York, I Love You,” this film features “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson and Melissa Rivera. Shot on location in Havana, the Spanish-language film tells the stories of various characters in the Cuban capital over the course of a week, with one segment devoted to each day.
“Cosmopolis,” directed by David Cronenberg
Based on the novel of the same name by Don DeLillo, “Cosmopolis” stars Robert Pattinson as a 28-year-old billionaire on a journey gone wrong across Manhattan. The film’s cast also includes Jay Baruchel, Paul Giamatti and Juliette Binoche.
“The Angel’s Share,” directed by Ken Loach
This Scottish comedy tells the story of a young father who narrowly avoids a jail sentence, determined to start fresh. He finds inspiration on a visit to a whisky distillery. Distribution is set for Ireland, Britain and other European countries in June but not for the U.S. yet.
“Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” directed by Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath and Conrad Vernon
The DreamWorks Animation threequel will have a noncompetition screening at Cannes ahead of its June wide release. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jessica Chastain are among the voice cast members of the Europe-set animation movie.
