Cannes 2012: Claude Miller’s last film will close festival

The Cannes Film Festival will pay tribute to a recently departed French filmmaker, announcing Wednesday that it has chosen “Therese D,” the final work from the late Claude Miller, as its closing-night film.
Based on a period novel by Francois Mauriac, “Therese D” stars Audrey Tautou as a 1920s Parisienne woman trapped in a bad marriage. The movie will play on May 27 after the festival’s awards ceremony. Miller died just two weeks ago at the age of 70.
A longtime protégé of Francois Truffaut, Miller frequently explored the frictional relationships of family and the complicated dynamic between social and private expectations. He is perhaps best known abroad for “The Little Thief,” the 1988 drama that Truffaut began and that Miller completed after the New Wave pioneer’s death. It centers on a French teenager (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) looking to escape her small town and became an international hit.
Miller also won the jury prize at Cannes for his movie ‘Class Trip” in 1998.
The full lineup for Cannes, which kicks off May 16 with Wes Anderson’s ‘Moonrise Kingdom,’ will be announced Thursday.
