Ricky Gervais is set to host the Golden Globe Awards ceremony for the third consecutive year, news that may come as some surprise to anyone who remembers his controversial turn as host last January. At the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s annual awards show, his jabs at celebrities from Robert Downey Jr. to the HFPA’s president sparked debate about whether his jokes went too far or were just the right amount of poking fun at Hollywood’s rich and famous. Here are 10 of Gervais’ insults from the January telecast.

On Scientologists, as compared with the characters in “I Love You, Phillip Morris”: “Two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay, so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists.”

On the ‘Lost’ series finale: “I’m not sure I totally understood it all, but from what I could make out, I’m pretty sure the fat one ate them all.”

On Golden Globe-nominated “The Tourist”: “It was a big year for 3-D movies… It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional. Except the characters in ‘The Tourist.’”

On Cher concerts: “‘Do you want to go and see Cher?’ ‘No.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘Because it’s not 1975.’”
