Robert Pattinson on 'Twilight' finale: 'It's the end of an era'

January 17, 2011 |  3:01 pm

Public speaking has never been Robert Pattinson’s favorite part of his job. But presenting the Golden Globe to director Susanne Bier for her drama “In a Better World” Sunday night proved to be a welcome respite for the actor, who’s knee deep in the middle of filming “Breaking Dawn,” the final installment of the “Twilight” saga, which will be split into two parts.

“It’s been really hard shooting both films at the same time,” admitted the 24-year-old star, moments before he had run backstage to present his award with “Tron” star Olivia Wilde. “But it’s the end of an era.”

That era certainly will be one that Summit Entertainment, the films’ distributor, not to mention the franchise’s devoted fans, will be sorry to see go. Starting with 2008’s “Twilight,” the fantasy romance that first saw Pattinson’s handsome, brooding vampire encounter his mortal love, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), the movie series has taken in roughly $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office, as audiences lined up to see Swan wrestle with her feelings for her immortal boyfriend and her best friend, Jacob (Taylor Lautner), a werewolf, over the course of the next two films, 2009's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" and 2010's "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse."

At the start of the first part of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn,” Bella consents to Edward’s marriage proposal — Edward’s condition if he is to grant Bella’s request that he transform her into a vampire — and the young couple are wed before heading to a remote island getaway for a honeymoon.

Speaking by phone this month, director Bill Condon, who’s helming both installments of the finale, said he has been thrilled with what he’s seen from his leads. “All the characters are moving [in this chapter]," he said. "It’s really about the passage from adolescence to adulthood, and they all seem energized by that. It’s the stuff they are all connecting to in their lives.”

As for Pattinson specifically, Condon added, “Now he’s dealing with a character who’s like him. The final movie allows us to step behind the curtain of what it’s like to be a vampire. It doesn’t seem that exotic anymore; It’s trying to be more real.”

The director, though, was reticent to share any details of the production, which is filming in both New Orleans and Vancouver, Canada, with a jaunt to an island off the coast of Brazil — a location that might in the end prove the most memorable to Condon, because the entire cast and crew needed for the honeymoon scene was stranded after a long day of filming.

“It was incredible. We got caught in the middle of this huge rainstorm — I’ll remember it forever,” Condon said. “Eighty people sleeping on the floor of the set. We couldn't leave.”

oh my god i have just read the book and cant wait for the film u could picture every detail in your head and u wouldnt have seen it comeing in eclips
well done to u for this film

I cant wait to see it! I know it will be AMAZING!!

i agree it's too early to say goodbye to the twilight saga, but is there or will there ever be a good time to let it go? At some point either the writer/director/cast will eventually add too much, too little. Completely destroying it. And If not, we'll love it so much we're back to this point once again where we don't want to see it end. Atleast we'll see them all live, and happy. The roles will live on in the characters and books.

Thank you to all the creators that made a fantasy become so real to me.

Thank gosh. Should have ended with the books.

If this sweeps more awards that Harry Potter, I lose my faith in both movie and book lovers.

Just to be that person, Breaking Dawn is filming in Baton Rouge, not New Orleans. Signed, a Baton Rouge resident.

Not ready for Twilight to be finished :(. Thankfully we have the books and movies to read/watch over and over and over again. Can't wait to see whatelse will come from the twilight crew!

Can't wait for the movies Water for Elephants and Bel Ami :)

there is another book after the breaking dawn, it is called the midnight sun but stephanie meyers didnt published the book.

I hope she get's inspired to write more, I mean it really doesn't have to end here. She could continue with writing about their daughter and on and on. I think if she did she'd be surprized by how many people would continue to follow. I myself am also sad to see it all end:(

It will be as hard to have the movies completed as it was to finsh the books. Thanks to dvd we can see them over and over, just like this is the 3rd time i've gone through the books.. but please,, why do you call Jacob a werewolf.. he is a ShapeShifter,, big difference. ShapeShifter,,, lots of books on them out there...he doesn't kill for blood..

Huge fan of Twilight Saga. Love the books. I've read all of them. The cast is awesome. Especially Robert Pattinson. I will be so glad when Breaking Dawn 1 & 2 comes out. I wish all of the cast, directors, producers the best. Great job. Thanks most of all to Stephanie Meyer!!

I will be so sad for twilight to end to never see the cullens again apart from on the DVDs but I will miss Edward the most he has helped me to love again thankyou x

never enjoyed a book like the twilight series!! what a ride! the movies put a pretty face to the books but don't compare. i first watched twilight and was not impressed. my sister made me read all 4 books on vacation...i then watched twilight again and was IN LOVE!!!!! for those of you who haven't read the books, shut the movie off, and read!! fall in love all over again:)

Im absolutely devestated this will be the last film! i can't remember watching a film i enjoyed so much as Twilight, us as fans just want to keep watching more and more, to the point of wanting it to become a tv series so we can get as much twilight action as possible, it will be a great loss

Stephanie , What a great writer you are . I have never been addicted to a movie like I am with the Twilights , I wasn't even interested in watching them until a friend gave me a copy & said WATCH !!! LOL Now I'm watching all the time & reading the books . My heart was racing watching the clips of Breaking Dawn , then I was thinking " I want to know Edwards story " then I see you are writing Midnight Sun !! Oh I can't wait for that book too & would love to see it on the screen. Great job !!

i love this movie

I am going to be so sad when twilight ends... I love these movies

i think she should writing.she is talented enough to keep it going and have it not seem like it is beeing drug on and on...i dont think the world is ready to have this end quite yet.

I wish you keep making more of the movies like never ending story just like the harry porter movies all of you guys are young why not?? i hope you keep making more movies i love all of you guys

this is a great story. the story on the movie is so great and even the book. breaking dawn is really going to be a hit for me because it has so many fantasies and makes you deal how love really matters i hope that midnight sun will also be a movie... :P

A friend of mine introduced me into the world of Twilight. She told me that she had an awesome book she wanted me to read and that they were making it into a movie. Now I haven't read in quite awhile so I'm thinking, "You've got to be kiddin' me, right?" So I take the book home and began reading the first chapter, then into the second chapter, into the third chapter. I had not read a book that had grabbed my attention for a very long time until I started Twilight. When I finished that book I had my husband drive me to Athens to the nearest Barnes and Nobles so that I could purchase the second book. I have since read all of the books, including the 'The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner'. I own each movie that has come out, I've downloaded most of the Twilight music onto my ipod.

I am going to be very sad when Twilight ends this year. As a fan, I have to say that I admire each one of the actors and actresses. They get up and stay up at ungodly hours of the morning or the night just to make a movie for our enjoyment. They look like they put all of themselves into the character that they are playing so that we can see the characters come to life out of the books that Stephanie Meyer has written.

I am a closet actress and love to do skits and plays; I guess you could say that I am a "closet Ham". LOL! I'm just a wanna be that would love to have a chance at something that is as big as Twilight. It seems like it would just be so surreal for everyone.

I wish each and everyone one of the actors and actresses the best of luck and a great time of building up a wonderful chapter of memories.

To Ivana: 'We can always hope for a remake'? No!!!! What is it with people expecting and wanting remakes nowadays instead of just accepting the film for what it is? To remake Twilight, is like remaking a Disney movie, the new version will never be as good as the original (with the exception of a few remakes which have surpassed their originals. ex. 'House on Haunted Hill' IMO).

I know if Robert Pattison was not in the installment of twight I would not watch it. So stay as close to the story as much as you can. Thats what brings a book alive keep us people sane. and another thing keep you paid. No surpises beacuse alot of fans will be upset. The last movie will be a bust. So miss writer be carefull that is other peoples money you are messing with. So watch what you say to the public. So make the finale era Happy so it can go on in the future.

can't wait to c breaking dawn. sounds like its gonna b beyond our xpertations. these guys really do work hard.
