Natalie Portman: I had trouble playing the pure girl in 'Black Swan' [video]

November 12, 2010 |  1:21 pm

In "Black Swan," Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller set in the world of ballet, Natalie Portman stars as a dancer whose dark impulses threaten to undermine her goody-two-shoes image.

It's the way that the actress handles this conflict that has won her acclaim. But Portman says the performance she delivers in the film didn't come easy -- and that she actually had trouble tapping into the pure, childlike side of her character.

"Being really girlish was the most out of my comfort zone, because I really felt like I'd left that behind," the 29-year-old said on the red carpet at the movie's Hollywood premiere at AFI Fest Thursday night.

Golden Globe Award winning actress, Natalie Portman, has a history of accepting challenging roles in big films, and delivering some of the best performances we can think of as a result. Natalie's career of playing characters that require hard work out of her depicts her as a passionate Hollywood actress who is getting the most out of her roles while starring in movies. Natalie's most notable performances that may have required more from her acting than she'd bargained for in the past have included, Mathilda, in 'The Professional;' Lauren Gustafson, in’ Heat;' Marty, in 'Beautiful Girls;' Padme Amidala, in 'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace,' 'Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones,' and 'Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith;' Sara, in 'Cold Mountain;' Samantha, in 'Garden State;' and Alice Ayres/Jane Jones, in 'Closer.' Natalie Portman is a beautiful young woman who has been doing super jobs in the movies she has starred in, and her leading role playing the character, Nina, in 'The Black Swan,' emphasizes that all of Hollywood's praise should go to Natalie. Considering how much energy Natalie Portman puts forth in her roles in movies, and in this year's case, 'The Black Swan,' it could be a good prediction that Miss Portman will be receiving her first Oscar statuette at next year's Academy Awards for her character, Nina.
