“Let’s do the time warp again…”

If that lyric conjures up a midnight memory of the best sort of freak out for you, as it does for me, this weekend is a way to truly do the time warp again in style at “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” 35th anniversary bash Saturday at 10 p.m. at the Million Dollar Theater in downtown L.A.

This is no ordinary screening filled with cross-dressing friends (or fiends) but will feature the fabulous local Rocky Horror Picture Show troupe, Sins O’ The Flesh, in full regalia and even fuller voice (it is, after all, as much about performances in front of the screen as those on it).

Director Jim Sharman’s quintessential ‘70s rock opera has held its shape quite nicely despite the passing years, thank you very much. And even if you haven’t held up as well, just squeeze yourself into that nurse’s uniform -- men and femmes alike -- pile on the pancake, don’t go easy on the eyeliner and come anyway.

Now if cross-dressing isn’t your thing, fear not. The jeans and T-shirt crowd is equally welcome on planet Transsexual, because if the camp classic riff on horror movies and outsiders is about anything, it’s inclusion.

Tim Curry is at his most memorable, if not his absolute best, as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, showing newly engaged couple Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) a more flamboyant slice of life. Bostwick will be on hand at Saturday’s screening.

But come for the scene and the music – riotous and rich with something for everyone in an R-rated raucous way.

– Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times film critic
