'Twilight' producer: 'Breaking Dawn' could begin shooting this fall

January 10, 2010 |  6:00 pm

It's been one of the biggest questions surrounding Summit Entertainment's uber-successful "Twilight" franchise (apart, of course, from whether stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson really are a couple off-screen) -- just how the producers are going to manage to pull off a big-screen adaptation of "Breaking Dawn." The fourth book in Stephenie Meyer's juggernaut of a young adult fiction series about the epic love affair between high school student Bella Swan and her good-guy vampire beau Edward Cullen has plenty of heft, clocking in at upward of 750 pages, but it also has the distinction of being the most controversial entry in the saga.

When it was released in August 2008, fan reaction was intense and divided with some "Twi-hards" expressing confusion and dismay over a plot that involved *SPOILER ALERT* a recently graduated  19-year-old Bella giving birth to a half-human/half-vamp daughter named Renesmee, who grows much faster than the average mortal child and who possesses a unique way of communicating with those around her, clearly inherited from Dad's side of the family.

Wyck Godfrey, the producer of all the films in the "Twilight" saga, admits that the creative team still doesn't know how they'll handle the character in the "Breaking Dawn" movie, but said that the plan is absolutely for the production to go forward -- as either one or two installments -- with an eye toward beginning to shoot in Vancouver this fall. All three stars are signed for "Breaking Dawn," he said, meaning that Stewart and Pattinson will be dealing with the joys and woes of interspecies parenting and newly minted heartthrob Taylor Lautner will return as often-shirtless shape-shifter Jacob Black.

At the moment, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who's penned all the "Twilight" movies, is working on the "Breaking Dawn" script(s). "It's a work in process," Godfrey said in an interview Friday. "The issue [of whether there will be one or two movies] is not going to be resolved until we get the full treatment and see whether it's organic. If it's not organic, I don't think it will be done, and if it is, it will be. It really has to do with how much level of detail from the books there is, with all of these new vampires that appear in 'Breaking Dawn,' the whole section about Jacob... It's a very long single movie if it does become a single movie."

Although there's been a great deal of online chatter about whether Chris Weitz, director of the second and most recent movie, "New Moon," would return to helm "Breaking Dawn," Godfrey downplayed that possibility, saying, "I think everyone would be happy and excited if he came back, but I don't think it's going to happen."

He and the other principals are formulating a list of potential directors, "but right now," Godfrey said, "we're just focused on the treatment and getting that right. At that point, we're going to see who's available and who's appropriate. It's such a complicated book because you have the emotions and the intensity of the love story -- so you need somebody who's just a wonderful director of actors -- and yet it's really complicated from an action and visual effects standpoint. They've got to have both tools in their kit."

A visual effects background might be particularly helpful when it comes to dealing with the character of Renesmee.

"I keep having visions of '[The Curious Case of] Benjamin Button' in my head," Godfrey said, referring to David Fincher's Oscar-nominated 2008 fantasy about a man who becomes physically younger as he ages. "It's certainly going to be visual effects in some capacity along with an actor. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a full CG creation, but it also may be a human shot on a soundstage that then is used to shrink down. I don't know. We need a director. When we get a director, that director will need to come with a point of view of how they want to tackle it."

The third movie in the series, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," is due in theaters June 30.

Well, there seems to be a lot of negativity surrounding making Breaking Dawn. I enjoyed the first two films, but I don't believe either one would ever be Oscar worthy. Just the fact that these books have been brought to life is awesome, so of course I anxiously awaiting the release of Eclispe and Breaking Dawn. The main thing I didn't like about New Moon (other than the fact that Edward (Rob) got as much screen time as Jacob (Taylor) even though it should have been Jacob's movie) is that it was over too soon. Two hours and ten minutes is a good length for a movie, but too short for this story, so I certainly hope that Breaking Dawn is made into two Movies - maybe that way Jacob (Taylor) will get his screen time. Oh and I agree that Renesmee should not be CGI, that will ruin it for me.

I'm so looking forward to seeing the movie(s)! I mean, Summit did a great job on the first two (+ the third, I hope!) so I'm pretty sure they're not gonna mess Breaking Dawn up too much. Sure, Renesmee could be a huge problem, but I already thought that about the wolves and look how great they turned out! They look so realistic, I was actually scared when Sam was in the woods just after Edward left. And to all those comments down there: Almost none of you is a real fan, because all you do is bashing the STORY (I mean, what the heck? It's the main reason REAL FANS read the books/watch the movies!), the actors (Stop dissing Kristen, she did a great job on capturing Bella. Let's face it: Bella is weird and doesn't show too many emotions.), Summit and Stephenie Meyer! In my opinion Summit did a great job. Truth is, the books weren't really popular when they made the movie, so it's just natural that they didn't spend billions of dollars on the production, that would've been pure suicide! Just look how they got better because of the experience! New Moon was, to say it in Taylor Lautner's words, stepped up a whole other notch. Just imagine what Eclipse and Breaking Dawn will be like when they keep getting better! To df: I'm not quite sure if we actually watched the same movies. The wigs are great and realistic... Except for Jake's in the first movie. That one sucked, I admit it. But I loved the one in New Moon! I was so sad when Jacob "cut" his hair. If you don't care about Riley and the rest... Then, well. I suggest you not to watch/read the Twilight Saga, because THEY ARE PART OF THE STORY!

There needs to be alot of E/B moments!!
Please try not to edit anything out, sitck to the book!(=
Make this movie as long as it needds to be, dont make any deleted sence, keep it all in the movie. Make it 4 hours if you can please!!

What would make the movies so awesome would be if they would just recast Edward and Bella with people who can act....

I love Twilight just because of the concept. I read the first book only after i watched the movie and will continue to do so as each on comes out! To be quite honest I don't find that Stephanie Meyer is such a terrific writer as most people claim her to be. i thought after reading pt 1 and seeing the movie that the visual aspect was much better because she made something as simple as eating dinner and going to bed sound like a tedious task!

If they decide to make B/D into 2 movies I'll be happy. The more the merrier! I think Melissa Rosenberg did a good job with the script considering what she had to work with.

I did not like Chris Weitz translation of the story. It sucked and left me unimpressed! Love to see Bryce Dallas Howard as Victoria!

Personally im glad either way that BD is being made, i mean can u imagine what will happen if the saga finishes on eclipse....I think melissa has her strong points when screen writing.....i think i can remember the uproar over twilight being well away from the book and i think new moon was as much to the book as she possibly could, i mean the romeo scene i thought was stunning.
I do think however Breaking Dawn should be made into 2 movies, i think we need to see the torment edward and jacob go through over bellas pregnancy, the viewers need to fully understand the imprinting, and we need to see bellas transformation i think that is enough for 1 movie and should end wher E/B get are in the cottage and says somthing like we no longer have any mundane human needs. Regqrding Renessmee i think we should have a baby in BD1 who communicates by touching, they can stick the CG into her thoughts, then bring in an older child in BD2 i mean carlisle can bumbf on that 1 get a 5/4 year old in, but i do think we need a Battle Scene at the end, the saga needs to go out with a bang

Okay so i've been waiting for forever to see what was up with Breaking Dawn. So now I finally get a little bit of an insight on whats going on and I'm not liking it. Well besides the whole fact that Rob, Kristen, and Taylor :D are in it. I hope these things below will help you in making the MOVIE. not MOVIES.
1. Emmetts comments towards Bella and Edwards emotions towards each other better be the same as the book. Or whats the point in even doing this movie, if you read the book you're expecting that in the movie.
2. PLEASE DON'T MAKE 2 MOVIES!!! Just make 1 really good long one.
3. Don't rush scenes, we know its not going to be as good as the book but we don't wanna be completely dissapointed.
4. Renesmee is important but please don't not do the movie just because shes a hard one to calcualte
5. The book describes Bella seeing things alot better than she can as her human self...please work on that and let us not be dissapointed.

Those are just a few things to think about. Thanks. VERY NICE JOB ON NEW MOON! IT WAS GREAT! Can't wait till it comes out on DVD! Much better than Twilight (Twilight was a dissapointment.)

and remember...2 movies BAD IDEA.

OK I love the BD book. It is awesome and of one my favs!!! I think the movie will be good if they stick to MAJOR parts of the book. The whole JAcob thing, come on ppl if you read eclipse then you know that it is not that he is in love with Reneesme. He will be whatever she needs him to be a brother, protecter NOT necessary her lover. I can't believe how some ppl think. I am a true TWILIGHT fan not much I can say for some of the comments I have read here :(

Keep it nice please...i'de rather not have to tell my mom as a 13 year old Twi-Hard that its rated R. i want them to skip the sex scene, or at least make it less visual and graphic through the water. PLEASE!? and stay out of the whole grusom blood thing por favor.

Please do this movie. Reneesmee has to be a real child, it will be tough but I think it can be worked out. MAKE IT ONE MOVIE NOT TWO. If people paid to see Titanic and it's length, WE will pay to sit though 3 +hrs of Twilight. The only reason they would need to make it 2 movies would be for money. The big "fight" scene at the end has to be in it also. I am sure they can hire enough vamps and CGI them pale to fill out the cast. I think they should also go back to Portland to film. Will be waiting for more info on the film.. Till Eclipse

hey i can not so wait until Eclipse comes out to theaters and better yet i can not till Breaking Dawn comes out to theaters cuse i want to see how they do that one and i sure hope that they are not planning on cutting all of jacob's and bella's stories cuse to understand one you have to read all of breaking dawn and i think that would be sad if they cut out the parts that is important to be in the movie. it would not surpirse me one bit if they would have to make it into a 2 movie type of thing due to the fact of how big and thick the book is and how many pages it contains

I am very excited to hear that Breaking Dawn is going to be made whether one installment or two. As long as they get all of the Edward/Bella storyline in the movie(s) I won't be disappointed. The only thing that will disappoint me is having too much Jacob and not enough Edward as happened in New Moon. I have seen Twilight probably 50 or more times but have watched New Moon only twice. If I purchase the DVD it will be for the scenes in Italy until the end when Rob Pattinson is once again featured. I am not interested in the friendship. I want the love affair between Edward and Bella. Breaking Dawn brings closure to that great love story.

Just cut Renesmee from the film.

There-- all your problems are solved.

PETER JACKSON should direct BREAKING DAWN...no ifs, ands or buts about it! He is amazing and could convey all the emotional stuff AND bring Renesmee to life realistically.
Lord of the Rings & King Kong's visual effects were awesome! I will see Breaking Dawn regardless of who directs it, but to me, there is no better or obvious choice than Peter Jackson!

Also, BD should be in 2 parts. If not, too much of the good stuff will be left out! Summit should just listen to the fans and follow the storyline if they want another successful movie.

What we all need to remember is that we have all obviously read the books, there are some people who havent, who just wait and see it at the movies which is their choice, i took a friend to watch New Moon ( who hadnt read any of the books) and she totally didnt get it, asking questions all the way through, the movie/s need to made so all will understand, x

Well I agreee with most there needs to be more E/B moments, that is actually what the whole saga is about, I also agree the screeenwiriter has not done a very good job, she leaves out important information and scenes that are important, I was very upset with New Moon ( I did enjoy the movie) but he scene where E/B come back from Italy, the plane ride etc. was left out and to me that is what made the book, leading up to Bella not thinking that Edward loved her and when the got back finding out he did, all that lead up was left out and that is what made the whole book for me. There is so much in Breaking Dawn, which is my fav book, you just cant leave anything out, and Renesme is very important you cant fake her??

plz make dis movie gud. do wattever u want 2 do but plz stick 2 da story n dnt make it haphazard. LUUUUUUUUVVVVVVEEDDDDD da previous two n am sure, hopes high, dat wud fall in luv wid eclipse n breakin dawn 2 once again

firstly, i hate it when ignorant people, who aren't even fans, comment on forums like this because they have nothing possitive to say! it annoys the hell out of me!
secondly, i LOVE the way, and every aspect of both films, Twilight, and New Moon! They were filmed perfectly; The drama, intensity, love, pain, and just everything about the films. I love Bellas' blinks, the wigs, edwards brooding, pain and frustration (i'm in love with robert pattinson(L))the kissing on the forehead (etc) and moreover, i cannot wait til i see how you've creadted Renesmee!!
Breaking Dawn is my personal favourite book! I know it will be amazinggg!!!!

One thing though; PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT rush bringing it out to cinemas because it's the final one... and i won't have anything else to look forwards to after it's been released!!!!!! :):):):):)

wow its gonna be soo cool hopefully it wiil come out very soon cause i love stephanie meyers work i read all the books like 4 times each and im still not sick of them i probably wont get sick of them EVER .

So WTH is everyone being so rude about the twiligh saga ! Like if you obviously dont like the movie then just dont EFFING watch it anymore ! Like why waist the 9 dollars to go to the movies if your just gonna complain about evrything that goes on it ! Im sure half of you people posting nonsense about the movie & the books just have nothing better to do then be obnoxious !

Hey, girls! Is that the recess bell I hear? Better put away your PDA's and get to Home Ec class!

i love this book sofar im almost to the middle. i really hope that you will make a movie out of it i am a huge fan of the twiligt saga. please email me and i woukd love to write you

Why couldn't they do Renesmee the same way that James Cameron did Avatar? It costs alot but they would get a really great product. Its a thought...

PLZZZZ don't cram it up in a two hour movie... if u wanna make it into one movie, make it like a 4-5 hour movie.... i think it would be best to make it into two movies, but i would HATE to have to see the first one one week, and the second one like the next week later..... and THEY BETTER STAY CLOSE TO THE BOOK AS POSSIBLE....... and i wish they would show more affection between the other cullen couples, even though i know bella and edward are the main couple. DO NOT SCREW UP ON THE FINALE OF THIS AMAZING SERIES.

I am captive of the Twilight saga, read every single page of all of the 4 books several times and still keep going back to them for more.
It is terrific news that Breaking Down will go into production and I can understand why evaluation to break the book into 2 films needs to be made, a good screenplay will do the trick, and I think the producer will still make great profit from the 5th film, provided that the cast will not demand unreasonable fees. They shouldn't be, money is not everything, to please the public who has been so tremendously supportive should be taken into consideration.

Robert Pattison is awesome in his role and Kristina is just as perfect. They, along with the rest of the cast, have greatly honored the efforts of the Stephenie Meyer and the the Screen writer.
