Golden Globes Live Blog: The show begins

Just after 5 p.m. PST, as we (ie, Steven Zeitchik) sit backstage and as the stars finally filter into the Beverly Hilton -- notable red-carpet moment: Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks and a few other A-listers walk right by most of the press without stopping for an interview - the show begins. Ricky Gervais gives a modestly funny opening -- his line about NBC replacing him with Jay Leno gets biggest laugh in the room -- and then the first award is handed out. It goes -- in no surprise at all -- to Mo’Nique for her turn as an abusive and emotionally troubled mother in ‘Precious.’ She provides the teariest moment this side of ‘Terms of Endearment’ with a shout-out to people who mattered to her and, particularly director Lee Daniels. Given the early call-out to Haiti earthquake, she’s striking the right note, but it remains to be seen how that will play backstage with the media. She should be here in just a few...
