Amy Kaufman covers entertainment for the Los Angeles Times, where she started as a staff writer in fall 2009. She was previously an assistant editor for the fashion and entertainment section of the Daily Beast and a reporter for The Wrap. During her time at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, Kaufman completed a number of internships, including one at the Wall Street Journal’s Los Angeles bureau and another in the Times’ own Calendar section. As a high school student in Boston, Kaufman aspired to an acting career. But after she earned a scholarship check by winning a Scholastic nonfiction writing contest, she shifted direction when one of the judges, novelist Esmeralda Santiago, gave her this gem of advice: ‘You can have a much longer career as a writer than as a Hollywood bimbette.’
