Bernard Madoff’s pants turned into $500 iPad covers

Redemption for Bernard L. Madoff, sitting in a North Carolina prison serving a 150-year sentence for financial fraud, is unlikely. But his pants still have a chance.
Wall Street denizens are snapping up iPad covers made from the Ponzi scheme mastermind’s clothing, which were sold off in an auction last year. Proceeds benefited victims of white-collar crime.
A new company, Frederick James, is even offering certificates of authenticity along with the lightweight sheaths. The sleeves are designed to protect the tablets from scratches and nicks, though not from drops like, say, the kind the stock market is currently experiencing.
For $250, buyers can grab one of four covers made from an off-white pair of Madoff’s J. Crew cotton khaki pants, size 34 by 30. Other options made with Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren threads are also available.
An initial batch made from a navy Dior sweater and a Bergdorf Goodman sweater vest sold out within a day, with one Wall Street lawyer buying five at $500 each, according to Style.com.
But the cloth curios aren’t the only symbols of the lingering fixation with Madoff. Plans for an HBO biopic are in the works. “Tower Heist,” a Ben Stiller comedy involving a Madoff-esque fat cat, comes out this fall.
