Jobless claims up. After dropping for a month, the number of people filing for unemployment benefits rose by 25,000 last week, the Labor Department reported.

Breaking up the banks. Two renegade Senate Democrats prevented the financial reform bill from moving forward as they pushed for the biggest banks to be broken up.

Euro going down. The European currency is likely to continue to fall in value to $1.10 due to the debt problems of smaller European countries, analysts say.
