The Academy of Barbering Arts has outgrown its Northridge home and will move into bigger digs in Van Nuys at the Plant, a shopping center built in a former General Motors automobile manufacturing plant on Van Nuys Boulevard.

Decron Properties, owner of the Plant, said Monday that the barber school has agreed to pay more than $1.7 million in a long-term lease for 11,625 square feet of retail space. The private school prepares students to face state Board of Barbering and Cosmetology licensing exams.

The Academy of Barbering Arts will move to Van Nuys in May, according to real estate brokerage NAI Capital Commercial, which represented the landlord in the transaction. Other tenants at the Plant include Anna’s Linens, Ross Dress for Less, Babies R Us, In-N-Out and a Mann 16-screen theater.
