Back in the dark ages of real estate cellphone technology -- 2006 -- Smarter Agent was making recent home sales data available to agents and their customers as they roved through neighborhoods with their global positioning system phones.

Today, Realtor.com launched a free app for the more than 40 million iPhone-carrying consumers who may like to look at property listings and open houses while they are out and about.

The new Realtor.com Real Estate Search iPhone app provides access to specifics on properties available for sale nationwide. Consumers can find homes using the GPS feature, take pictures, save notes, rate properties, send links and perform other functions.

The application is compatible with iPhone OS 3.0 or higher and the iPod Touch. It can be downloaded directly or from the consumer information page on Realtor.com.

Is it worth it? Free sounds pretty good to me. I’m not an iPhone user (and not tech savvy in general) but I was able figure it out. If any of you iPhone users try it, report back.
