Amid the devastation the recession has wreaked on retail sales, Macy’s has been trying to reinvent itself, retail reporter Andrea Chang says. The venerable chain has been tailoring its stores to specific regions, pushing its online presence and boosting its promotions to draw customers.

Macy’s is trying to reverse the decades-long decline in the department store business model that has seen many mall-weary consumers shifting their shopping habits to big-box discounters, free-standing stores and the Internet.
