Jay Leno, a self-avowed ‘car guy’ and card-carrying member of the Motor Press Guild, is prepping for his new prime-time comedy hour and one of the ideas on the table is a regular automotive segment.

Leno, once approached by the producers of the popular BBC’s ‘Top Gear’ to host an American version (Leno declined the offer), seemed to find a way to have his own automotive programming placed into his new format. At a press tour in Pasadena, Leno revealed details about the new show that included an automotive segment.

An article in today’s Los Angeles Times Business section by Scott Collins and Meg James reports on the plan:

One idea for a recurring comedy bit includes a ‘green-car challenge,’ in which celebrities would race electric or hybrid cars. Tom Cruise has already asked whether he could do some practice runs before competing, Leno said. (The host told him practice runs are forbidden.)

The BBC’s ‘Top Gear’ show has a celebrity segment that Leno recently participated in called, ‘Reasonably Priced Car,’ where celebrities race once around a track to try to beat the standing record. Leno, driving a Chevrolet Lacetti, came in as the second place American to Mark Wahlberg with a 1-minute, 48.8-second run.

For the record: The original article stated that Leno was the second fastest driver, it has been corrected to state he was the second fastest American driver on the segment. jg
