Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser of the U.S. Southern Command said a number of U.S. Coast Guard and military ships in the region are moving toward Haiti, among them the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson. He said the Vinson, carrying a number of helicopters, will arrive in the area Thursday afternoon.

He said the condition of the Port-au-Prince airport remains a problem. Though some flights are arriving, the airport’s tower and operational capacity is “limited.”
