Mexico should prepare for the return of 350,000 countrymen from the U.S

Mexico should prepare itself for both the forced and voluntary return of more than 350,000 of its people currently living in the United States due to the financial crisis north of the border,  an organization representing farm workers warned Sunday.

Cruz Lopez, the head of la Confederacion Nacional Campesina (The National Confederation of Farm Workers) said that the return of so many Mexicans will increase unemployment here and also add to problems being caused by a fall in the remittances sent by migrant Mexicans living in the United States.

Lopez, quoted in Milenio today, said: “We are in the middle of a grave economic conflict that in no way is the little sniffle that President Felipe Calderon and his cabinet would have us believe.”

There is a saying here that when the United States catches a cold, Mexico gets pneumonia. That bodes badly for Mexico should the United States catch pneumonia -– which is how many have diagnosed the economic crisis currently gripping Mexico’s northern neighbor.

Mexico’s finance secretary Agustin Carstens said at the end of last month that the country can withstand the crisis in the global financial markets because its banks aren’t reliant on external credit.

Illegals have devastated my neighborhood. It's like one day I woke up and my house had been mysteriously transported into the middle of an impoverished, crime-ridden, uncouth, third world city.

And I'm supposed to get on my knees and kiss the feet of the illegals because they done so much good for the U.S. Tired of them saying our country would fall apart without them

Load of baloney. Go HOME. Por Favor.

Our country is falling apart because of them.

Obama will win by a Big Landslide and Racials, Multiracials and Latinos will help a lot.

I have been gathering the Prices for Bets at INTRADE. These are the prices for buying and selling options or shares to win $100 if your candidate wins.

I make a Toss Up States Table with the numbers every day and I am astonished to see how the Obama prices increase in these States and how McCain sinks in price in those swing states, day by day. See below please.

The Obama Coalition consists of : Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, Multiracials, White Youth, The Educated and Cultured Whites, The Moderate and Tolerant Protestants, Catholics, Italians, Irish, etc..

The Coalition has a great future for many years or decades to come, because of Demographic Changes that announce a great increase of non whites, specially Youngsters and first time voters.

Who is the racist? The worst comments are from proponents of crime (illegal immigration) Who hate Americans

I 'm a Hispanic whose family came originally from Mexico.
Becoming an American citizen was the greatest thing my great grandparents could imagine. No one asked the schools to teach them English. No one took welfare checks. We lived in shacks. Now we live in gated communities. My family worked and went to school on our own.

Proponents of illegal immigration are disgusting. The people who break the law to come here are criminals.

I see only Americans sick of being taken advantage of.

And Mexican nationals afraid of the truth.
.

No wonder CA is broke. CA and MX can quit fighting..China will bail out and own CA thanks to Arnold.

Seems to me that the paper has turned to the right and is pandering to the Irvine/Thousand Oaks crowd since it was sold by the Chandler Family.

I'm sick of this web site and this paper being a forum for neo-Klansmen and sympathy for their narrowminded views.

Why don't all the white folk go back to Europe? They're the real illegals! Give this land back to the brown race.

Enough with the "give California back to Mexico" comments. How about giving Mexico back to Spain? Or back to the Aztecs, etc. Blah blah blah.

I can only cringe at the thought of California being run by the Mexican government.

Please shut up already!

Seriously, the person who runs the LA Times blogs is racists or willfully ignorant. This is just a forum for ignorant people to attack non-whites. And when someone places the same argument back to the ignorants, they won't post it.

I'm sick of this.

LA Times - wake up and reflect the city you supposedly serve.

"Mexico should also start a program of population control to stop the over breeding of their people."

Only the very poor have as many kids as Gov. Palin and only very powerless women have children in their 40's. in Mexico.

perhaps you'd like to go to the CIA Factbook to compare US population growth to Mexico's.

The sad thing is that now everyone (including the illegals who come to this country to find a better life) will be paying for the past 10 years of GLUTTONOUS SPENDING of Americans most of whom live way above their means...so now the party is over.

Legal Immigrants ONLY are always welcome here.
Illegal Aliens should be marching for justice
in their own countries instead of ours.
They are not "heroes" here.

can I watch and salute as they go back across the border?

Mexico should get California back

To all those that think that we need all these extra people to do jobs that Americans won't do- think again. Americans imported cheap labor to subsidize their extravagant spending ways. Now, with the economy tanking, all those jobs are going to dry up quick.

350,000 will be a drop in the bucket as Americans cut back on discretionary spending. People who are worried about loosing their jobs and paying their mortgages don't go out and hire gardeners and pool cleaners, they stop eating out, they don't get their cars washed, they don't remodel their homes; not that loans are available to do so anyways. In short, they don't use the services that illegal aliens work in.

People are scared, they're not spending, they're not borrowing. Already I see with my friends and family, their spending is being kept to a minimum and unnecessary purchases eliminated.

Pretty soon, it's going to be a major problem of low skilled workers, legal and illegal, who can't find jobs and are drawing on more and more limited social services. Add in the fact that cities and counties budgets are shrinking, both for what they can pay for social services, and for projects that might indirectly employ illegals such as roads, construction, etc are also going away. This is gonna be one big mess for illegals.

Newcontrarian-
Maybe it's 30, 40, or 50, doesn't matter. You can't have it both ways. This country is getting what it deserves.

"Who will do ALL THE HARD low paying jobs now!!!!"---

How about the legal guestworkers and Americans who WERE doing the jobs before it became Mexican Only territory with those wanting slave labor. The migrants would have had steady wages and wage enforcement. Construction would once again be done by whites, blacks and Mexican Americans like it was before that industry became Mexican Only.

How can people claim compassion and condone illegal aliens but carry on about slaves from the past ? Illegal workers cheat the citizens but find themselves also cheated by the employers.

If you're a truly caring person, illegal immigration would be hated by you. Otherwise, you're a wannabe plantation owner. You might be fooling yourself but God isn't quite so easily fooled and God is who you represent with your compassion . Right ?

This article is nothing but a tease for all the anti-undocumented immigration radicals.

What a pathetic attempt at a story to quote a political figure, the head of a farm workers union... lame!

And look at all the pathetic radicals coming with their tongues hanging out waiting for attention... their cult is no more responsible just because the LA Times is willing to cater stories to their tastes...

I'm shocked at these comments. 99% of Mexicans who come here, come to WORK, and work very, very hard.

A global slowdown is going to affect everyone, and people in poorer countries will suffer much more than us in the US. We may be unable to afford Ipods--they may be unable to afford food.

people have this paranoia and deep seated fear that they are being attacked. this anger breeds hate mongers. you all are sad victims of regurgitated rhetoric. find some new arguments. it's not mexico who is at fault, it's a nation state like any other. if you all looked at the U.S. investment in Mexico, you would understand that it is not Mexico, but the U.S.

Stop trying to make these lawbreakers look like the innocent victimns. Good make mexico pick up the tab for their own. We need to start paying for only americans. People WITH A LEGAL RIGHT TO BE HERE AND GET OUR BENEFITS

Who will do ALL THE HARD low paying jobs now!!!!

Mexico should also start a program of population control to stop the over breeding of their people. After a few years maybe they can get a handle on their poverty problems and not send them North.

We can no longer afford to be the welfare and prision system for Mexico.

Deal with it.

HA-HA!!!

I would revise that figure to 20 million as we are no longer willing to host a population that does not respect our laws, mores, ethics and culture. Ya basta!
