La mujer gorda canta (the fat lady sings) in Tijuana

July 24, 2008 |  1:52 pm

There isn't much Tijuana is known for that has ever made its residents proud. But in recent years, one of Mexico's most daring art scenes has emerged in the city. Opera is part of that.

Tijuana now has dozens of kids studying voice. It has several choirs, an orchestra, a music conservatory, and an opera company.

Plus, every July for the last five years, opera fans hold a festival on a street in a most unexpected place.

Here's the L.A. Times' video report.

I am a Tijuana native and really apreciate stories that show the good things about Tijuana. There are good things and bad things that happen everyday in Tijuana. One thing that invariably pops up in the US media is that Tijuana is always called a "town". I do not know of any town in the world that has around 2 million inhabitants, dozens of universities, world class medical facilities, builds most of the TV's sold in the US and 3 professional sports teams. Tijuana is not a town, it's a city!!!

What a great report--very heartening!
