Immigration debate stoked by “sanctuary” cities, sham marriages

Los Angeles Times Opinion blogger Swati Pandey highlights an interview with Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Bill O’Reilly’s show, in which O’Reilly’ raises the question of sanctuary cities.

McCain: Obviously, I don’t approve or would oppose sanctuary cities, but again, it’s a larger problem. And that is our failure to carry out a federal responsibility to enact immigration reform. That means securing our borders first, a temporary-worker program, which we need. It is associated with tamper-proof biometric documents. Anyone who doesn’t have that is prosecuted.

Meanwhile, an Orlando Sentinel report investigates how immigration roundups in Florida are exposing sham marriages between illegal immigrants and citizens, enabling foreigners to remain living and working in the United States.
