Mexico reconquers California? Absolut drinks to that!
The latest advertising campaign in Mexico from Swedish vodka maker Absolut promises to push all the right buttons south of the U.S. border, but it could ruffle a few feathers in El Norte.
The billboard and press campaign, created by advertising agency Teran\TBWA and now running in Mexico, is a colorful map depicting what the Americas might look like in an "Absolut" -- i.e., perfect -- world.
The U.S.-Mexico border lies where it was before the Mexican-American war of 1848 when California, as we now know it, was Mexican territory and known as Alta California.
Following the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo saw the Mexican territories of Alta California and Santa Fé de Nuevo México ceded to the United States to become modern-day California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Arizona. (Texas actually split from Mexico several years earlier to form a breakaway republic, and was voluntarily annexed by the United States in 1846.)
The campaign taps into the national pride of Mexicans, according to Favio Ucedo, creative director of leading Latino advertising agency Grupo Gallegos in the U.S., which was not involved in the Absolut campaign.
Ucedo, who is from Argentina, said: “Mexicans talk about how the Americans stole their land, so this is their way of reclaiming it. It’s very relevant and the Mexicans will love the idea.”
But he said that were the campaign to run in the United States, it might fall flat.
“Many people aren’t going to understand it here. Americans in the East and the North or in the center of the county -- I don’t know if they know much about the history.
“Probably Americans in Texas and California understand perfectly and I don’t know how they’d take it.”
Meanwhile, the campaign has been circulating on the blogs and generating strong responses from people north of the border.
“I find this ad deeply offensive, and needlessly divisive. I will now make a point of drinking other brands. And 'vodka and tonic' is my drink,” said one visitor, called New Yorker, on MexicoReporter.com.
Reader Paul Green goes into a discussion on the blog Gateway Pundit of whether the U.S. territories ever belonged to Mexico in the first place, and the News12 Long island site invited people to boycott Absolut, with one user, called LivingSmall, writing: “If you drink Absolut vodka, you can voice your approval or disapproval of this advertising campaign with your purchases. I know I will be switching to Grey Goose or Stoli and will never have another bottle of Absolut in my house.
“Hey Absolut ... that's my form of social commentary.”

I think Absolut is trying to pull in money from all the ignorant people in Mexico who believe the U.S. stole their land. What they probably don't know or care to know is that Mexico invaded the United States first by killing American soldiers in Texas, which was by then it's own internationally recognized republic. During the Mexican-American War that followed as a result of MEXICO'S actions, we invaded their country and seized the capital, ending the war quickly and with little effort. Instead of occupying Mexico or forcibly seizing ANY of its territory, we actually offered to PAY them 15 million (over a quarter billion in todays money) for California, Nevada, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and New Mexico. This land was already occupied and cared for mainly by Ameicans (less than 20% of the population was Mexican).
So I would say in an Absolut world, Mexico would have been completely conquered by the U.S. when we took Mexico City in 1848.
This ad is very disappointing. I will certainly make a point of forwarding it to my email contacts and will go out of my way to purchase other brands of vodka in the future.

Great ad! It wil definitely make me more inclined to buy that brand! It's pathetic the way many "americans" got offended with this ad. As if they don't offend the world with their presence. The typical offended person: white trash, cheap U.S. beer drinker, fat, and still in the belief that Iran and Iraq are the same, and still thinking that Iraq was involved in 9-11. Shame on you, pathetic loser.

After losing control of Norway, maybe Sweden has more in common with Mexico than you would think. Absolut? Absolutely not! no mas, no mas!

Hi, if this ad were a mexican tequila brand, it would be no lie at all and no history. With all the mexicans living in the south of the US, this is actually how the cultural invasion has been from south to north.
Sorry, but it's like when the roman empire was invaded by all the barbarians culturally. The time has come.
Smile =)

I will NEVER purchase absolut or Jim Beam again! Since the dollar vote is the only vote americans have had on the issue. If mexicans did take over that part of the country they would want back in the U.S. again within a decade due to the ruinous slum it would become. How bout this, don't like us, dont take our money!
Posted by: Sick Texan | April 07, 2008 at 03:14 PM
The ad is stupid, but with our swiss cheese borders, I'd say it is fairly accurate. There's so many (illegal) Mexicans here in Georgia, you'd think the border extended further East.
Posted by: DeputyJ | April 07, 2008 at 03:13 PM
From a marketing standpoint, this ad is fabulous! It speaks directly to the target population, which is Mexicans, not Americans. Honestly, it's an amusing ad and the people who are insulting and boycotting seriously need to chill out and get over themselves!

Ok guys, you make war, you kill hundreds of thousands of innocents, you send your soldiers to die for the Bush family business, GWB spends trillions of taxpayers dollars on his oil wars while gas prices soar...
We just print funny ads that ruffle the feathers of some thin-skinned people like the guy that says "I believe in freedom, I believe in liberty, but I hate commies and I'd say smoke em out..." Nice 'libertarian'...
That's it. Get over it or get a life....

For those of you who think we Americans just can't take a joke...the problem is this is no joke to many Mexicans, and it's no joke to those of us living in the States that in an "Absolut" world would be part of Mexico. There are several groups who do want to take back what they consider their land. The map that Absolut drew up looks identical to the one I see these groups use. Absolut knew exactly what they were doing. Anything to sell vodka, eh?
For those of you boycotting Absolut and switching over to Grey Goose (yeah, the French are officially OK again now that they have a new president), what would be even better would be to switch to Tito's Handmade Vodka (made right here in good 'ol Tejas). It's decent (has won many awards), the price is reasonable and you're keeping your vodka dollars in the USA.

Spaniards invaded and slaughtered the Aztecs, Mayans and any other tribes they could find, destroyed the temples and used the stones to construct Catholic churches; slave labor was used, naturally. Soon, they brought the inquisition. Then, Americans took part of the conquered territories. I think Americans come out pretty good, relatively speaking. We allow freedom of religion, frown on the inquisition and, until Cheney and Bush, we had a Bill of Rights.

All this has shown me is that the internet is proven once again to be the spot where morons with opinons that make very little sense like to hang out and try to make a point. Everyone who is "boycoting" absoulte vodka is not going to hurt them one bit, but we all know how special you are making this very important *ahem* "social comentary" by doing this.. Yeeeahhh(clap clap clap) you are all making such a radical move to stop driking absoult vodka, you should be pround silly americans (I am one also , for the record), you get offended by anything little thing that hurts your american ego... most of you morons do not even live in the southwest. bleh, what a waste of time, inculding the time I took to write this.

Ad creates high product awarness at the expense of consumer backlash and boycotting of product. Senior managment lost common sense along with ability to gauge real world risk of negative feedback that accompanies ads produced for the sole purpose of creating high awarness. Stockholders unite and throw the bums who approved this ad out on their dumb asses. It is in the interest of both the U.S. and Mexico to control illegal border crossings.

I wonder if the same ad were run in Sweden with the flag of the Third Reich covering their country and reading "In an Absolut World" if any Swedes would be offended. It might be a stretch, but it's essentially the same concept.

First off, Ketel One is a much better vodka at a comparable price.
Secondly, people who think this is a "take that for stealing our land" ad forget that Texas declared itself independent of Mexico, and then happily annexed itself with Estados Unidos. So to act as if in an "absolut word" you are righting a wrong, just remember that at least one region had the foresight to align itself with the better nation state.

A modest proposal.
The United States of America must take the next step to fulfill it’s manifest destiny. Our southern border should be moved south to the Panama Canal. We can easily appropriate the lands between our existing border and the new one. It may be necessary to accomplish this worthy and inevitable goal through the means of warfare. The necessary war will be a short one as the current inhabitants are a passive lot. We will call the new state New Usa.
The people who currently live in the region are an impoverished and primitive people whose lives will be improved by the new laws we impose upon them. We of course will allow them to work in the fields growing our food as they so love to do.
We should at all times treat the population of New Usa with the respect they deserve. As a demonstration of that respect, a reparation payment of one Peso per acre will be paid to each worker whose land we have added to New Usa. As long as that peasant swears on the life of his family, complete, total and irrevocable allegiance to the USA, and denounces as illegitimate, the existence of any previous government or culture, he and his family may remain on the land, so long as the fruits of their labor are made freely available to the new government.
The health of the worker population, and more importantly the level of productivity in the fields, is of utmost importance to the new government. Foods such as re-fried beans, melted cheeses, flat breads, rice, peppers, meats flavored with spices, etc. will be outlawed by decree of the new government. As a further health measure, tequila and cerveza will be outlawed and replaced with vodka.

Like the fact that gas is ridiculous and government doesn't seem to have a solution for us? That to me offends me a hell of a lot more than a ridiculous liquor ad!

First, to those of you who chastise criticism of this debate with the unimaginative "Can't you take a joke?" remember that behind all humor is a little bit of truth. Absolut knew what it was doing with the now-defunct advertisement.
Second - "Funny block" et.al., display an annoying ignorance of what constitutes "censorship" when they equate it with a personal decision to not patronize a product or service. Absolut's ad staff has not been arrested, the company has not been seized by police or federal marshals, and the company's other advertisements have not been pulled. You are free to personally reject any message you choose and the source of that message has to accept the consequences. The First Amendment applies to GOVERNMENT supression of speech.

everebody knows about the robbery on Mexican territories in 1847 so all those territories still belong to Mexico and it will be forever ,so Mexico has the full right to recover all those territories and to expel to all the usurpers living in those Mexican territories, meanwhile Mexico lets usamericans to raise a wall all along the false border because now a days us is a muck collector a big big muck collector and Mexico doesnt want to be contaminated so Long Live to Mexico and remember we'll have our territories back soon and remember america means the whole continent .

unruffle those feathers folks. the mexican population is largely mestizo which is a mix Native American & Spanish. they had more claim to the southwest than the illegal european immigrants who colonized the US by murdering & forcing it's original inhabitants onto small regulated "reservations". the map of north America should look more like this in an Absolut World http://cache.eb.com/eb/image?id=64913&rendTypeId=4

Absolut stupidity.
The American southwest was part of Mexico for 27 years. It's been part of the U.S for 160 years. There isn't a Mexican alive today that had this land "taken" from them. I'm sick of hearing the "we didn't cross the border, the border crossed us" crap. Go home. Oh, that's right, you won't because you know how screwed up and corrupt Mexico is.
In a perfect world we would just make Mexico the 51st state. Great beaches, good fishing, beautiful women. Sign me up. Lets really move some borders! Si se puede!
Posted by: BorderLine | April 07, 2008 at 02:05 PM
Let's see, if Mexico had the territory in the Absolut ad all along, what differences would there be?
Las Vegas would not exist, it would still be a desert.
the entire area would be a trash dump, as is Mexico, with people urinating in public and defacating in the dressing rooms of what stores did exist (Like they do today at the mall. find a bathroom people. It's got white porcelain seats you sit on.
Dirty baby diapers would be in the streets instead of in the trashcan. We find diry diapers in the streets now since the mexicanos move in.
i've never seen a nationality so bent on destruction. They've destroyed their own country and now they want America. They let their government take their country and push them out.
Fight for what's yours. fightfor Mexico. one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
ABSOLUT VODKA WILL NEVER TOUCH MY LIPS OR COME INTO MY HOME AGAIN NOR ANY PRODUCTS PRODUCED BY THEIR PARENT COMPANY.

I will drown in Absolut Vodka! Thank you spirits maker, than you.
I thank the Lord I have lived long enough to see OUR land being taken back. God is on our side, and Reverend Wright is right when he screams, "god da ... america." We Mexicans are so happy! We will fill the grand canyon with junk and garbage. We will make it smooth. Yes, taking back OUR land, day-after-day, second-after-second. Andale, andale! Arriba, arriba!
Posted by: Mexifornia Resident | April 07, 2008 at 02:01 PM
/sigh
I see even though they already pulled the ad, and appologized, Drudge still has the link on his site so all the mouth-breathers can continue to scream their heads off.
Funny, when my grandparents and great grandparents came to America...some came legally, others didn't. There was the same backlash then, except then it was because they were Irish or Italian. Some 3-4 generations later, I guess we're full Americans now right?
I guess right now is just the Mexicans turn. But those of you who fear LaRaza/Reconquista, you are delusional. The great majority of Mexicans who come to the US do so because they HATED living in Mexico. Hence why they don't want to go back...if given the right to vote, they aren't going to vote for succession.

While it is tres chic to poke at the United States, I highly doubt that the Absolut company would run an ad showing Norway as part of Sweden with the phrase "In An Absolut World".

Houston does NOT have more fortune 500 companies than CA. I think the state of Texas has a couple of more than the state of CA - because of the oil thing. Take away the oil companies and you don't have much. I said all innovation comes from CA, meaning tech and bio-tech, solar, etc. I didn't name all of the companies here in CA either.

There was NEVER a Mexican Indian north of the Rio Grande until the Spanish came to Mexico and conquered it, this land was originally the land of American Indian tribes, and NONE were ever Mexican, or Hispanic, or Latino, or Meztiso, or Aztec, or Mayan, or Toltec, or Chicano, or Cholo, or Vato, or Homie.
By the way Mexicans have been murdering American Indians for centuries!
Mexicans are indigenous to the land SOUTH of the Rio Grande!
Why is it that Mexicans never marched through Mexico City and claimed their "indigenous" rights in Mexico? THAT is the land of your native ancestors, not the USA.
Why is it that Mexicans don't organize and March, and riot against a corrupt thieving government in Mexico, YOUR LAND?
You have your own country, it is called Mexico, and it is the land SOUTH of the border, go back there and make it a better place to live.

Let me start by saying I am a mexican. I have been legally living and working in the States for some years and I really don't get all the outrage from American people over an ad for crummy vodka. History is written, and ad is not going to change it. It is JUST AN AD. Get over it. It is funny how people talk about writing to the company execs that created this campaign and boycotting their product. I wish I could see the same outrage and letters being written to Congress to address the REAL issues this country is facing. How about the fact that over 4,000 U.S. soldiers have died in a completely illegal and unnecesary war, while president Bush and his croonies make away with billions of your tax dollars? Money being squandered away that you and your grandchidren will be paying for decades to come. Where is the outrage over any of this? We are being fed all this lies everyday, not doing anything about it, but it somehow makes some of you feel you are fulfilling your patriotic duties by drinking Grey Goose instead.
Wake up people, and get your priorities straight.

Thank You Robert Borquez. Your posted comment (4/07/08 at 12:03) make me feel good to have you here as an American citizen. To read that you are here to add to the American way of life, and not to change it, is very gratifying to most Americans.

First: Americans are all the people of the continent (not only USA), why you "Americans" don't understand this!!
Second: The half of the Mexican Territory in the XIX century was STOLED by your National Heros like Jackson, James Polk and your Congress (of course with the collaboration and ineptitude of the Corrupt and Stupid General Antonio López de Santa Anna).
Third: You are a nation founded by immigrants (Don't foget it!).
Fourth: If you are very angry with Absolut don't buy it anymore!
Fifth: Please read something of history before you write your opinions (México Mutilado of Francisco Martín Moreno is a good option).
Seventh: Cheers-Salud Absolut!!!

C'mon guys, don't raise your blood pressure (i'm referring to you, offended americans) for something so silly, it's not worth of it. Take the following in account:
1) It's an AD. I repeat, with capitals, an AD. If you still don't know it, ADS are made to sell, and it was targeted to the mexican audience for the sole purpose of selling vodka. An AD must gain public attention to sell the product, right?. This is quite obvious for you americans, who invented modern advertising. For the average mexican (extremists doesn't account, they are the 0.000000001% of pop.) this is a silly joke, not to be considered seriously. Just a resource to attract attention. So effective was that it gained attention from abroad, that means, you from the US.
2) For many years Mexico and the mexican people has been used as an icon in advertising and american media for the folkloric, laughable, ridiculous and exotic. Remember Speedy Gonzalez??. Let me tell you something, Speedy has lots, lots of followers here in Mexico. It hasn't been prohibited of being exhibited, even from its launching in the fifties of the past century. And if you watch many american tv series and movies from the past century, well guess who was the bad, ugly, distrustful character who no one wants to be but it is always present in the border creating problems to the honest WASP people?? Yayyys sir, we are those!!! Just watch "The Right Stuff" movie to see how Alan Sheppard (great guy) enjoyed to impersonate a mexican character from american TV in the early 60's and who was (should i say it?) dumb, dirty, stupid, but still laughable. And for this age, just watch the Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, etc. But we don't take this seriously, it's silly.
3) I was aware that many people in the US is deeply enloved of conspiracy theories, from anything and for any taste (wackos watching Area 51 trying to catch an ufo, a lot of believers in biblical armageddons, those who think that alien control devices are implanted via vaccines, a global government operating in the dark, Men In Black, etc), but the concerned to a "Mexican invasion" to reconquest territories lost during the first part of the XIX century is, oh boy, absolutely, completely and totally ridiculous. For not saying something else. If this "theory" were true, then we mexicans are extremely malevolent but able, intelligent, sophisticated, well organized people. So organized we are that we like to be disguised as messy people just for the sake of fooling you, american people. Oh yes, we are much more organized than the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany and the Japan Empire were, all together if pleases you. It's perfectly evident we are a menace and we have fooled the CIA, FBI, NSA, DIA, the complete Homeland Security Department, FDA, well even PETA, Greenpeace and the Salvation Army!! Wow, who can stop us? Yes, we mexicans are always a step ahead of you, certainly. You can't catch us. We are "predators" and you need the good old Arnold and Danny Glover to fight us.
4) Perhaps you don't know it, but the apples, peaches, oranges, many fruits and vegetables doesn't appear magically, automatically at the supermarket. They need to be harvested and many people from Mexico (along people from countries south of the border) is responsible for that. The same goes for meat, the same for clothes, the same in construction industry, the same for housekeeping, etc. And that, jingoist ladies and gentlemen is reflected in the stable prices of the merchandice you purchase. So, this people, illegal immigrants, whether you like it or not, is subsidizing your american way of life. No, they are not sisters of charity. It's a matter of economic convenience, for you and them, both parts.
5) An analogy about the local industries in California, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona can be said. México is the main export partner that California has (http://www.ppic.org/content/pubs/rb/RB_804HSRB.pdf). Yes dear friends of California, we are the main receiver of your exports, and they are well paid for your financial wellbeing, which means jobs for many of you. In the same way California buys billions of dollars from Mexican products. Remember, we are partners, it's a matter of economic convenience. Arnold, the "Governator", constantly pays us visits. No, he's not promoting any Terminator, Junior or clone movie. He has come many times to México to promote sales of products from Californian companies. And the same goes for the rest of the governors of the american Southwest states. BTW sons of Texas, check the following (http://www.dallasfed.org/research/swe/2006/swe0602b.html). You'll find (Chart 2) that almost 50% (yes, the figure is right) of your exports goes to, shall i say it??. You guessed well!! México. Your Alamo ancestors shall be rolling in their graves, as well as my own too, because we are checking hands via trade, just for the sake of greenbacks. Yes, i know, they are multicolored now, but the name sticks. And i must admit it, i still like them, despite i like euros too.
6) Finally (hurray!!) for your self-gratification, yes, we mexicans are still a mess, we do have a mess in México. Corruption, poverty, social injustice, yes we have lots, less than before, but still lots. But (the next doesn't go for your self-gratification) guessed what??. You also have your share!!. Yayys sir. Your own, fresh and locally produced share of it. And it's not something to blame us. A sizeable part of your population loves to consume drugs. Mmmmh, something must be wrong with your societal foundings, some professor of sociology could say. The american market is the greatest market for drugs in the world. Recently we have had in México more deaths per year related to combat the drug traffic than those accountable for the Irak war (yes the war you made), about 4000 the last year. On this 2008 we are going to raise the mark. Soldiers, policemen, children, seniors, women, many many deads. Machine gunned, knifed, eviscerated, even decapitated and burned. Just because they were trying to protect the health of your citizens or just because they were in the middle of a crossfire, wrong place, wrong time. And it's not just drugs. Your love for fireguns makes easy for drug dealers to acquire guns, machine guns, shell rockets, antiaircraft guns, wow, even the NATO guns M60 and M249 (who could have sold these? Just those who make use of them) in the US. So the thing goes this way: drugs flow northward, cash and guns flow southward. This traffic, this trade is not made using the uninhabited places in the desert. Is made mainly trough customs, mexicans and americans. Corruption, greed is in both sides of the border.
7) If your economy is slipping down now and the greenback is not what it used to be, please, don't blame us. Go to Washington, Capitol Hill is the place, or better else, Wall Street. The Fed too, they knew about the problem since a long time ago. Yep, those are the places where you can find who to blame and make accountable for the mess in the economy you have. And we are not getting the jobs off your hands. It's the grim faced of the american capitalism. The american capitalism you are used to love and even promotes outsourcing.
So, with all said (or almost perhaps), relax, take it easy. We are not going to take your country off your hands. We don't need it, we don't want it. We have plenty of ours for us. If you still persist saying we are invading you, well, again guess what. You invaded us with a lot of companies, lots. Its revenues feed your economy. México is the second place in the world with Wal-Mart stores, 1033 units. You can check at http://www.walmartmexico.com.mx/1distrigeo.html Did you know that more than 1 million of americans live here in México? And they live well, they like to live here, and we accept them gladly. And we don't think that they are invading us.
And for your own sake and health, please don't listen Lee Dobbs trash. He is making money from selling illusions, raising bugaboos. But, if you still want to be worried, well, you have plenty of causes to choose from and to be concerned of. For instance, your economy, dollar devaluation, mortgages, bankruptcies, loss of competitivity, China growth, Russia developing new weapons, new plagues (aviar influenza, Nile plague), global warming, hurricanes (season is coming!!), earthquakes (California here i go!), Al-Qaeda, etc, etc. Forget Britney, Paris and else. They are not worried about you.
Ahh, if you didn't know it, but Dr. House franchise is a worldwide franchise. I'm responsible for the mexican operations of the franchise.
Peace and Love

The real ad that needs to be run is this...
In an Absolut World... And then take away all the f-ed up borders.
J. Billington Bulworth said it best... What we need is an organized voluntary program of racial deconstruction... Everyone keep F-ing everyone till we're all the same color"
The only race on the planet is human. Once humans realize that we're all in the same situation and try to work together to end the problems caused by drastic inequalities foisted upon us by those with more than their fair share... Maybe then humanity will become everything it can be and get beyond petty issues such as racism.

Relax Guys: It is only a commercial. Read your History books and remember: Things WERE as they WERE; things ARE now as they ARE. No sweat and enjoy any vodka, tequila or whatever fancies you... !!!Salud¡¡¡

This ad is terrible in a time of border issues. The USA is overrun with illiegal immigrants and is struggling to manage this within the social construct of government services and infrastructure. The reason we have immigration law is to allow society to manage the process of integration. This ad is in very bad taste. Perhaps the next ad can show the Aztec Empire before the Spanish. Why stop at showing old maps of Mexico? Sell more vodka in the UK and show a map of the British Empire in 1897 and call it Absolut Britain? Or show a map of Ireland without the Northern Ireland border and call it Absolut Republic to sell more vodka in Ireland? I am sure that would go over real well too.

HAHA, it is real funny yeah it would be a perfect world for Mexicans, it would be a dump like the rest of Mexico is; and they would be still illegally crossing to the other states.

Does anybody knows where I can get a copy of the ad?
I would like to make a huge banner and put it in my front yard, so everybody can see what was taken from us...
Well done Absolut...I'll drink you forever..
