Man killed while walking on 5 Freeway in Commerce

A man in his 50s who was walking on the southbound 5 Freeway in Commerce was killed early Sunday after being struck by two vehicles, authorities said.

The victim was walking north about 2:50 a.m. in the traffic lanes of the freeway just north of the Triggs Street exit when he was struck by a motorist who left the scene, said Officer Cheyenne Quesada, of the California Highway Patrol.

The man was hit again by a driver in a white Toyota Corolla in the No. 1 lane who then pulled off the freeway and called authorities, Quesada said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unknown why he had been on foot.

All southbound lanes in the area were closed for about three hours. East Los Angeles CHP personnel is investigating the incident.
