A day after International Women’s Day, dozens of Southern California residents took to the streets Saturday to call attention to a variety of issues, including poverty, incarceration, foster care and veterans’ needs.

About 60 people gathered at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility downtown before heading south on Spring Street, chanting, “Education, not incarceration.”

“Women live in poverty around the world. They bear the brunt of wars that men start, and it needs to stop,” said Alise Sochaczewski, a psychotherapist from Los Angeles.

Pat Alviso of Military Families Speak Out said her son has served five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We want money to be spent on the services needed for families that are struggling, not on wars and other things,” said Alviso, 60, of Long Beach.

Similar demonstrations were also planned in Hollywood and locations across the country and around the world.
