Hospital bomb scare prompts evacuation of ER; man in custody
A man was in custody Monday after several floors of a San Fernando Valley hospital were evacuated for hours because of a bomb scare that turned out to be false, authorities said.A man walked into the emergency room of Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday acting erratically, hospital officials said.
He told staff members that he had a bomb and left a duffel bag inside the waiting room, according to LAPD Sgt. Francisca Wheeling.
About 30 patients were evacuated to another part of the hospital, said Jim Theiring, the hospital's chief executive.
Authorities determined there was no bomb or threat after finding only clothing in the duffel bag. The evacuated patients were returned to the emergency department.
The man, whose name was not released, was taken into custody and no one was hurt in the incident, authorities said.
