Whittier power outage knocks out 911 lines to city police
A large power outage in Whittier on Monday night knocked out emergency telephone lines at the city Police Department and left thousands of people without lights, authorities said.
All 911 calls in the city were being routed to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department as utility crews worked to get power restored after apparent problems at a substation, according to officials.
"All the land lines are down," Lt. Bradd Molner of the Sheriff's Norwalk Station told The Times. "We're the backup."
As many as 10,000 people were affected by the outage. Crews from Southern California Edison were assessing the damage at the substation, the utility said on its Twitter account.
There was no estimate on when power would be restored.
