Teenager found dead near casino had drugs in system

Alyssa Byrne, the teenager found dead in January near a South Lake Tahoe casino, died of “probable” hypothermia and had drugs in her system, according to an autopsy.

Byrne, 19, who was from Petaluma, went missing after leaving the Snow Globe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe the night of Dec. 31. Her body was found three days later, about half a mile from Lake Tahoe Community College, where the festival was held.

Investigators have said there were no signs of traumatic injury or foul play but were waiting for an autopsy to determine how and when Byrne died.

The autopsy found she had methamphetamine toxicity and had ingested psychoactive drugs.

Byrne wasn’t found for a few days because she was on a snow bank and not visible from the road. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department said it’s common for people to climb snow banks to get out of the way of traffic.
