Longshot candidate Emanuel Pleitez is running for mayor of Los Angeles like nobody before him: In sneakers, shorts and, one hopes, plenty of sunscreen.

In an unlikely get-out-the-vote tactic, Pleitez plans to jog 100 miles across the city in the six days before the March 5 primary election. A spokeswoman for the candidate said he will be accompanied on parts of the route by athletically inclined supporters and will be trailed by a van of campaign volunteers.

The journey begins Wednesday afternoon in Canoga Park and, if all goes well, ends Monday in San Pedro, said the spokeswoman, Joceyln Sida.

Sida said she has no doubt that Pleitez, who is lagging behind in the fifth place-spot in most polls, is up for the daunting physical challenge of running some 16 miles daily for nearly a week.

“He’s been an athlete all his life,’ she said. ‘And he’s only 30 years old.’

A former tech executive, Pleitez suprised many when he raised enough money to qualify for city matching funds and earned a spot at many mayoral forums and debates. While he has strived to ignite enthusiasm among Latinos and younger voters, he has struggled to compete with the well-funded campaigns of his competitors.

Sida said the run will give voters across the city a chance to meet Pleitez and bring attention to his long-shot campaign. “We don’t necessarily have millions of dollars to spend on mailers or robo-calls,” Sida said. “Our campaign has been different this whole time.”

There are campaign stops planned along the route, Sida said, and Pleitez will keep previously scheduled commitments, including appearances at upcoming debates. Hopefully, he’ll have time to shower first.
