6-year-old boy dies when car slams into pole, tree in Inglewood

Inglewood police on Thursday were investigating a crash that left a 6-year-old boy dead when a driver crashed into a pole and a tree.

A male driver slammed into the cement pole and tree on Prairie Avenue just north of Grace Avenue at 7:46 p.m. Wednesday, partially ejecting the boy from the vehicle, said Lt. Neal Cochran of the Inglewood Police Department.

The driver was the boyfriend of the child's mother, Cochran said. Neither the boy nor the driver was  identified.

The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital at 8:50 p.m., Cochran said. Police had earlier said the boy was 5 years old.

The driver also was taken to a hospital for his injuries, Cochran said. He appears to have been driving at least 70 mph and could have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Cochran said.
