Body found in San Gabriel Canyon riverbed

A body was discovered Wednesday afternoon by hikers in the San Gabriel Canyon riverbed, according to the Azusa Police Department.

Azusa police Sgt. Andy Sutcliffe said the remains were found about 3:40 p.m. in thick shrubs at the mouth of the canyon, adjacent to the 1700 block of California Highway 39.

Sutcliffe said the body had been at the site for "an extended period of time."

He said the partially decomposed remains made it difficult for authorities to immediately determine sex or race. The cause of death was also not known.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office is assisting police in the death investigation.
