Beverly Hills High wins county Academic Decathlon

Beverly Hills High School has won the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon, earning a spot in the the state competition in Sacramento next month.

Beverly Hills bested 51 other teams, scoring 52,990.3 points out of a possible 60,000. The competition was open to all Los Angeles County schools that are outside the Los Angeles Unified School District -- which holds its own competition.

The decathlon tests students in math and science, economics, social studies, art and music theory.

West High School in Torrance took second place, but scored high enough to earn a wild card berth to the state contest. Other schools that also will compete in Sacramento are: Burbank High School, Mark Keppel High in Alhambra, El Rancho High in Pico Rivera, Redondo Union in Redondo Beach, and South High in Torrance.

The three top-scoring students came from Beverly Hills High, with Jenny Chieu earning the highest marks with a score of 9,786.7 out of a possible 10,000. She was followed by David Mnitsa with 9,340.2 points and Victor Lee with 9,330 points.

Nine schools from Los Angeles Unified also will compete in the Sacramento decathlon. The top scoring campus in L.A. Unified, according to results announced last week, was Granada Hills Charter High School.

The winning team at the state contest will go on to the U.S. Academic Decathlon, to be held in Minnesota in April.
