Woman hit by train, dies in Santa Fe Springs

A woman died early Tuesday morning after her car entered a Santa Fe Springs railroad crossing and she was unable to navigate away from a train’s path.

At 11:44 p.m., a 25-year-old female was driving a black Volkswagen Beetle east on Rosecrans Avenue when she entered a train crossing, said Officer Brad White with the Whittier Police Department, which patrols Santa Fe Springs.

The woman attempted to make a U-turn in the intersection but was unable to move her car in time to avoid the train. Authorities had not yet said whether it was a freight or passenger train.

“In her attempt to do so, this train came through,” White said.

The train hit the car and sent it flying down the tracks. The woman, who has not been identified pending next-of-kin notification, was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m.

Investigators do not initially believe that drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, White said.
