Cue the bird and plane jokes.

A video of a radio-controlled Superman flying along a Carlsbad beach is making the rounds after a man posted the roughly 30-second clip online last week.

Shot from along the Pacific Coast Highway, the cellphone video shows a nearly life-size version of the superhero soaring above the ocean several times.

‘I was cycling with my buddy down PCH and during our casual conversation ... Superman flew by,’ Kyle Gough wrote on liveleak.com and YouTube, where the video appeared. ‘We stopped, got off our bikes just in time to watch him land. After a quick battery change, I grabbed the only thing I had on me (my cellphone, sorry for the ... quality) and took some video of what is EASILY the coolest custom RC plane I’ve ever seen.’

So far, the video has been viewed more than 300,000 times on the two websites combined.

[Updated, 1:25 p.m. Jan. 3: In an interview with The Times, Gough, 27, said he was cycling last week when it swooped overhead.

“A life-size Superman just flew over us,” Gough said. “I said, ‘We need to stop. I need to find out what that is.’”

Gough and his friend followed the soaring superhero to a stretch of beach where two men were operating its remote control. Superman was brought back to land for a quick battery change and when he took off again, Gough pulled out his cellphone to record the flight.

Initially, he wanted to show his father — “he’s a big Superman fan,” Gough explained — but eventually posted the video online. It’s since garnered more than 300,000 views on YouTube and liveleak.com.

Gough, who works as a security contractor and is a student at Cal State Fullerton, said he stayed at the beach for two hours talking to the man flying the superhero. He said the machine appeared custom-made — its legs moved individually as it flew, and even came with a cape.

Gough said he’s seen gliders flown along that stretch of beach, but never anything like this.

“It’s definitely a first,” he said.

And as for the Superman jokes?

“I lost count,” Gough said of the number he’s heard. “It’s funny. People say, ‘It’s a bird, it’s a plane — oh wait. It actually is a plane.’”]
