Slick roads lead to 6 crashes on Highway 101

Slick roads may be to blame for chain-reaction crashes on Highway 101 in Hollywood early Friday morning.

Six accidents involving 16 cars had shut down the southbound side of the freeway near Barham Boulevard.

It all started with a solo-vehicle accident around 12:20 a.m., followed by five crashes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 6-week-old infant and seven other people were taken to hospitals, including one man in critical condition.

“One of the traffic collisions, one of the passengers got out and that person was subsequently struck by one of the other vehicles,” CHP Sgt. Richard Matthews said.

“So in total we have six traffic collisions that were all in a short period of time. There were approximately 16 vehicles and that one pedestrian.”

The freeway was shut down completely for a time, but the sigalert was lifted around 2:20 a.m.

CHP officials said alcohol was not believed to be a factor in any of the crashes, and none of the drivers is expected to be charged.

Drivers are being warned to take things slowly, as periods of rain are expected again Friday and continuing through early Saturday.

The most widespread rain will likely be Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Another low pressure system will pass through the area Saturday night into Sunday resulting in further cooling, but little in the way of rain.

Cool and dry weather is likely early next week, with some warming possible by midweek, the NWS said.
