Six die from flu in San Diego County

Six people ranging in age from 49 to 92 have died from influenza in San Diego County, health officials said Tuesday.

Last week, there were 311 flu cases reported, more than double the previous week. Flu cases represented 6% of emergency visits to local hospitals. A total of 670 flu cases have been reported this season.

‘The best protection against the flu is to be vaccinated,’ said Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. ‘It is not too late to do it. There is available vaccine.’

Of the six who died from the flu, two were 49, one 66, one 89, one 91, one 92, and all had underlying medical conditions, officials said.

Flu vaccine is available at doctors’ offices and retail pharmacies. The county Health and Human Services Agency has flu vaccine available for children and adults with no medical insurance. For a list of locations, visit www.sdiz.org.

Last season, 14 people died from the flu in San Diego County.
