Scattered showers in Southern California to remain through Sunday
The steady rain that soaked Los Angeles freeways overnight is expected to break up by Friday afternoon, leaving only scattered showers and cool air by the weekend, the National Weather Service reported.
"The steadiest stuff, based on radar, should be winding down," said meteorologist Scott Sukup.
The Weather Service issued a thunderstorm warning for Southern California sailors and high surf and rip tide advisories for surfers Friday.
There's a 30% chance of rain Saturday morning, mostly before 10 a.m. Another overnight downpour is expected that night before the storm completely passes by Sunday evening. Temperatures will remain between the upper 50s and lower 60s, Sukup said.
About an inch of rain has poured down on Southern California since Wednesday night, causing car crashes and freeway gridlock. Four SigAlerts were issued Friday morning on the 101 and 10 freeways. An infant was hospitalized in one overnight crash and a woman was trapped in her car under a big rig in another.
Commuters should have an easier drive come Monday.
The rainstorms are expected to be replaced by a wave of cool, dry air coming down from Northern California, keeping overnight temperatures down to the low 40s through Monday. Then the weather is expected to gradually warm into the mid-60s during the day by Thursday, according to a weather service forecast.
